[Liver transplantation: teaching strategies used with patients waiting for surgery].

This study aims to describe the learning results of the implementation of teaching strategies involving patients who will be submitted to liver transplantation. One of these strategies is to give the patients a manual with orientations and the subsequent application of a questionnaire related to the content of the manual. Authors analyzed 13 patients who were waiting for liver transplantation. With respect to the answers regarding the questionnaire, an average of 83.8% of correct responses was given and only one patient got all the questions right. During the correction and the time to clarify their doubts, authors concluded that the opportunity of reading the manual and applying the questionnaire allowed patients and families to get a better understanding about the surgery's most important aspects.

[Leadership as a strategy for implementing evidence-based practice in nursing].

The evidence-based practice approach incorporates evidences originated in research, professional clinical competence and the client's preferences with a view to health care decision-making. Leadership is a crucial component for the development of the nurses' work mainly when the context requires changes. Thus, in an attempt to offer literature-based inputs for reflections and discussions, we present leadership as a strategyforimplementing evidence-based practice in nursing, with a view to stimulating the use of research results in clinical practice and, consequently, improving client care.

[Systematic review: a resource that allows for the incorporation of evidence into nursing practice].

Systematic review is an important resource in evidence-based practice, which consists in a form of synthesizing the research results related to a specific problem. This article aimed to offer subsidies for reflections with a view to the construction and/or application of systematic reviews in the nursing environment. Based on the literature, authors presented the phases comprising a systematic review and the relevant aspects that must be considered for using this resource.

[Surgery in out patient units: identification of nursing diagnoses in the perioperative period].

This study aimed at identifying nursing diagnoses in the perioperative period of surgery outpatients. Levine's theory was selected as a theoretical framework in which four conservation principles are proposed, namely: energy conservation, structural integrity conservation, personal integrity conservation and social integrity conservation. Data were collected by the researcher in the outpatient service of a private hospital in the city of Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo, Brazil) in the months of January and February 2001 by using a previously validated instrument. The sample consisted of 30 adult patients submitted to surgeries in different specialties with regional or general anesthesia. After data collection, the identification of nursing diagnoses was made using the process of diagnostic thinking described by Risner. The construction of diagnostic categories was based on the NANDA taxonomy as well as on the study by Carpenito. In the perioperative period, fifteen diagnoses were identified and, in this study, those which obtained a frequency equal to or higher than 50% were analyzed, namely: anxiety, infection risk, lesion risk due to perioperative positioning and pain.

[Analysis of risk factors related to the incidence of surgical site infections in gastrosurgeries].

Nosocomial infection is regarded as a serious problem whose incidence and complexity has been increasing, thus generating various types of social and economic implications. This investigation aimed at assessing the incidence of surgical site infection and risk factors in patients submitted to elective surgeries in the specialty of gastroenterology performed in a public hospital in the interior of São Paulo State. Data were collected by means of a retrospective study of medical records from January to December 1999. Of the 134 cases under study, the occurrence of surgery site infection was detected in 18 situations (13.4%). Nine cases (50%) were considered to be superficial incisional infections, 8 (44.4%) were deep incisional infections and 1 (5.5%) was an organ/space infection. With respect to the risk factors, the ones with percentage higher or equal to 50% were: age above 50 years, the presence of neoplasia, surgeries that last more than two hours and inadequate trichotomy.

[In search of the best evidence].

Evidence-based practice is an approach involving the definition of a problem, the search for and critical evaluation of available evidence, the implementation of evidence in practice and the evaluation of the results obtained. In order to implement this approach in nursing, nurses must know how to obtain, interpret and integrate evidence stemming from research in the care rendered to patients and their relatives. Based on the literature, this article presents theoretical considerations concerning the hierarchy of evidence and where to search for the best evidence.

[Evidence-based practice: strategies for its implementation in nursing].

Evidence-based practice is an approach that enables the improvement of health care quality. The use of research findings on founded practice is one of the pillars of such approach; however, there are various barriers that hinder this nursing process, such as the lack of nurses' skills, lack of time and organizational support (human, material and financial resources). Therefore, based on the literature, this article presents some strategies that allow for the implementation of evidence-based practice in nursing in whatever area the nurse may perform.

[Applying situational leadership in emergency nursing].

This study aimed to identify the correspondence of opinions between nurses and nursing staff members who work at the emergency unit regarding the leadership style performed by nurses and the style nurses must adopt considering the maturity level of nursing staff members and the care provided at the unit. Situational Leadership was adopted as a theoretical reference framework. In order to achieve these goals, instruments were elaborated and applied to 24 research participants. Results demonstrated that the leadership style nurses most frequently perform was E3 (participating), and that nurses should adopt leadership style E4 (delegating) in view of the nursing staff's level of maturity, suggesting that staff members present a high level of maturity (M4).

[Evidence based practice: theoretical considerations for its implementation in perioperative nursing].

Evidence-based practice enables the quality improvement of the nursing care delivered to clients/patients. This work aimed at providing elements that will lead to reflections on the scenario concerning perioperative nursing. Accordingly, based on literature, authors have made considerations regarding evidence-based nursing practice, general concepts, its importance and the obstacles to its implementation in professional practice, aiming at encouraging surgical nurses to seek for scientific knowledge by developing research and applying its results.

[Validation of the sterilization procedure of medical and hospital devices according to different packaging types].

Safety in the processing of medical and hospital devices in healthcare organizations is an important measure of nosocomial infection control. This investigation aimed at establishing the period during which it is safe to use medical and hospital articles processed through sterilization by saturated steam under pressure using different types of packaging at a private hospital. The methodological procedure consisted of four phases: preparation of articles, evaluation of autoclave functioning, sterilization cycle and microbiological tests. Results showed bacterial growth on articles packed in surgical grade paper with and without film on the 21st day, in crepe paper on the 90th day and absence of growth when raw cotton packaging was used. In face of the results, a 21-day period was established for the use of articles after sterilization by saturated steam under pressure regardless of the type of packaging utilized, considering that storage conditions were also evaluated.
