Temporary tarsorrhaphy in the rat.

Temporarily suturing the eyelids together may be necessary in certain studies where corneal dryness or ulceration may appear as secondary complications to experimental manipulation. This column describes the surgical technique of tarsorrhaphy in general, and details its use in the rat.

Restraint collars. Part I: Elizabethan collars and other types of restraint collars.

Restraint collars can provide an investigator with a noninvasive means to prevent certain undesirable behaviors and provide a clinician with a nonpharmaceutical method to prevent an animal from inflicting self-injury; without proper use and monitoring, however, these collars can do more harm than good. This first part of our look at restraint collars introduces collar types and proper use. Next month's installment will review specific issues associated with the use of different types of collars for different species.

Diagnostic cystocentesis: technique and considerations.

Cystocentesis, the aspiration of urine from the urinary bladder, has both diagnostic and therapeutic uses. This month, we discuss the diagnostic reasons for using this technique and summarize the steps necessary to safely perform the procedure in laboratory animals.

Blood collection from the tail of a rat.

Techniques for blood collection from the rat include puncture of the heart, retro-orbital plexus, jugular vein, saphenous vein, tail blood vessels, carotid artery, abdominal aorta, and vena cava. Most techniques (except saphenous vein and tail blood vessel puncture) require anesthesia. The following discussion focuses on two methods of blood collection - ventral tail artery puncture and dorsal or lateral tail vein puncture.

Blood collection from the cranial vena cava of the ferret.

The domestic ferret, though not as common a laboratory animal as the rat or mouse, serves as a model in critical research areas, including influenza biology and vaccine development. Studies involving ferrets necessitate knowledge of proper blood collection methods, such as cranial vena cava puncture.

Air sac cannula placement in birds.

Air sac cannulas are indicated in birds with upper respiratory obstruction or for ventilation during surgical procedures involving the head and neck. Proper technique, knowledge of potential complications, and an understanding of the indications for air sac tube placement are important for scientists, veterinarians, and technicians who work with birds.
