Multiexponential decay autocorrelation function in dynamic light scattering in near-critical ternary liquid mixture.

The dynamic structure factor of a ternary liquid mixture is calculated from the theory of thermodynamic fluctuations with the help of linearized hydrodynamic equations. The theoretical model allows evaluating and classifying the transport properties near a critical solution point of a ternary mixture. In the vicinity of the critical solution point, experimental dynamic light scattering measurements reveal two hydrodynamic relaxation modes with well-separated characteristic relaxation times. From the autocorrelation functions, we can determine two effective diffusivities D(1) and D(2). As theoretically predicted by a model developed in this work, one of these two modes can be associated with thermal diffusion and the other with mass diffusion. In the special case of an incompressible liquid mixture limit, D(1) and D(2) are decoupled, becoming thermodiffusion coefficient D(T) and mutual mass diffusion coefficient D(ij). A possible physical meaning of D(1) and D(2) for a ternary mixture is discussed.

Exploring the melting of a semirigid-chain polymer with temperature-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering.

The thermal behavior of semirigid semicrystalline polymers differs significantly from that of flexible-chain polymers. The origin of the differences is believed to lie in the higher energy expenditure associated with the formation of adjacent re-entry folds at the crystalline surface in the case of semirigid chains. The effect of constraints imposed by the interlamellar amorphous regions on the neighboring crystals was studied with temperature-resolved synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The analysis of SAXS patterns with a generalized paracrystalline lamellar stack model indicates that melting of a semirigid-chain polymer is not a random process but that the crystals grown in the smallest amorphous gaps melt first. This suggests that the hitherto largely neglected geometrical confinement effects may play an important role in determining the thermodynamic stability of semirigid-chain polymer crystals.

Non-Abelian statistics of half-quantum vortices in p-wave superconductors.

Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-Abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state.

Evolution of the lamellar structure during crystallization of a semicrystalline-amorphous polymer blend: time-resolved hot-stage SPM study.

The mechanisms of polymer crystallization at the nanometer scale have been investigated with a hot-stage scanning probe microscope (SPM). The processes of lamellar perfection, e.g., lamellar thickening and merging of lamellar fragments, are revealed during the secondary crystallization stage. It is shown that the information contained in SPM images can be comparable to that of time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). In addition, SPM opens the way to examine subtle structural changes that would certainly be overlooked in the global morphological parameters obtained from a simple SAXS correlation function analysis.

[The role of serotonin in the effects of cholecystokinin-8 on memory in rats].

The HCK8 was found to inhibit the field search behaviour in rats. Administration of the peptide impairs formation and reproduction of a habit within 1 hour and 24 hrs. The data obtained suggest an important role of the brain monoaminergic systems in the mechanisms of the HCK8 effect upon learning and memory.

Loosening and unfolding of E. coli 50 S ribosomal subunits: dependence on magnesium content and temperature.

Reversible change of 50 S ribosomal subunits to 40 S particles takes place in cold buffered 0.5 M NH4Cl solutions either containing Mg++ (up to 0.1 M), or free from Mg++ and even supplemented with EDTA (1 mM). The 40 S particles were stable only within a definite temperature range. Heating of the samples caused completely irreversible unfolding of the 40 S particles. This "melting" appeared to be co-operative and took place within a very narrow range of temperature, which for samples containing Mg++ was a linear function of the log of Mg++ concentration. The results suggest that two types of bonds maintained the compact structure of the ribosomal subunits: ionic bonds involving Mg++ and heat-labile weak interactions between ribosomal components.

An x-ray diffraction study of ribosome structure.

Dense gels of E. coli 70 S ribosomes, their 50 S subunits, CM-like particles, RNP strands and their fragments, 38 S particles obtained from RNP strand folding upon addition of Mg2+ ions, and of unoriented salt-free and free rRNA sodium and magnesium salts were studied by X-ray diffraction. It was shown that under dense gel conditions RNA molecules contained in ribosomes unfolded by desalting, like all other particles considered here, have helical regions. Under these conditions free desalted RNA has no helical regions. Experimental data on X-ray scattering at medium angles were compared with the diffraction curves calculated for homogeneous prolate and oblate ellipsoids, for various ellipsoids containing a dense region or an internal cavity, and for ellipsoids containing internal periodic regions. The results indicate that the internal structure of the 50 S ribosome is periodic, i. e., its components form a periodic lattice. The lattice spacings are approximately 42 and 28 A with a 0.8g/g dry weight sample water content. When the 50 S particle water content drops below 0.2 g/g dry weight the periodic structure is disrupted. This disruption is reversible. It was shown that CM-like particles at high ionic strenght (2 M LiCl) have approximately the same internal periodicity as the 50 S particles, but in contrast they lose this periodicity at low ionic strength (10-2M tris-HCl and 5-10-3 M MgCl2).
