The huge variety of medical applications demands a similar number of pumps customised for optimum performance in each application. One important element that has a significant influence on the overall performance of a pump is its drive system. This article describes the typical drive systems employed in miniature pumps and highlights the consequences of selecting one type over another.
The huge variety of applications in the medical field represents a challenge for the design of miniature pumps. There are well-known designs such as piston pumps, eccenter diaphragm pumps and peristaltic pumps. There are lesser-known types such as the rotary diaphragm pump, the subject of this article. Its design features, variants, and advantages and disadvantages are examined.
The strengths and weaknesses of different types of pumps for use in compressible media applications are described. The considerations to take into account to select the right pump for the application are demonstrated in a blood pressure measuring device.
