Arachnia propionica (Actinomyces propionicus) as an unusual agent in tympanomastoiditis.

The actinomycetes are extremely uncommon causative agents in chronic tympanomastoiditis. Few cases have been reported in the literature, and, before the use of penicillin, the majority of patients died of intracranial extension of their disease. Two patients described in the recent literature could have had their conditions diagnosed preoperatively as cholesterol granuloma. They had intact but immobile or bulging tympanic membranes and histories of intermittent perforations with drainage. The diagnosis was suggested during surgery because of the presence of yellow-green amorphous "sulfur granules" scattered throughout the mastoid. Both patients were well following mastoidectomy and long-term penicillin therapy. The clinical history of a patient with tympanomastoiditis due to Arachnia propionica (Actinomyces propionicus) is discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported of a patient with otic disease due to this strain of the organism.

The penetration of formulated Guthion spray through selected fabrics.

A technique for comparing pesticide penetration through fabric was devised. It involved passing fabric swatches through a controlled spray system and measuring the pesticide residue transferring on and through the tested fabric. Six variations in fabric were selected for testing: 100% cotton woven chambray, Scotch-guard treated chambray, Tyvek, Crowntex, and two variations of Gore Tex. Guthion (azinphos-methyl) was chosen as the insecticide for controlled use in this experiment because of its widespread use and relatively high toxicity. Gas chromatographic analysis of the amount of Guthion transferred through the outer fabric was made by the use of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's multiple range test. The ANOVA for experiment replication showed no significant difference among the replications of each fabric. The treatment ANOVA was highly significant at the 0.01 level. Duncan's multiple range test further analyzed the differences in the treatment, and three groups were found to be significantly different from each other. The two types of Gore Tex, Tyvek and Crowntex comprised the group permitting the least penetration Scotch-guard treated chambray followed, and untreated chambray allowed the greatest penetration.

Enterobacteriaceae identification compared by MORLOC (a new system) and API 20E.

Identifications of 201 Enterobacteriaceae isolates were compared by MORLOC (a new system) and the API 20E system. Identifications agreed for 192 isolates (95.5 per cent). Of the nine discrepancies, MORLOC was correct for four, API for three; neither for one; and for one, MORLOC agreed with the reference laboratory but apparently all three systems were incorrect. The MORLOC system requires an extra day for a TSI but is smaller and simpler and can be recommended as easier to use, more reproducible, less expensive, and, in this study, more accurate than the API 20E.
