Health and memory in people over 50: a survey of a single-GP practice in England.

One hundred and forty people over the age of 50 randomly sampled from a single-handed British general practice were screened for dementia using the Kendrick Cognitive Tests for the Elderly. The tests results were compared with actuarial data concerning health and health services provision. The results indicate that there are clear interrelations between low but non-dementing scores in memory and speed performance with the use of services, mobility levels and chronic disorders.

Numerical experiments with model monophyletic and paraphyletic taxa.

The problem of how accurately paraphyletic taxa versus monophyletic (i.e., holophyletic) groups (clades) capture underlying species patterns of diversity and extinction is explored with Monte Carlo simulations. Phylogenies are modeled as stochastic trees. Paraphyletic taxa are defined in an arbitrary manner by randomly choosing progenitors and clustering all descendants not belonging to other taxa. These taxa are then examined to determine which are clades, and the remaining paraphyletic groups are dissected to discover monophyletic subgroups. Comparisons of diversity patterns and extinction rates between modeled taxa and lineages indicate that paraphyletic groups can adequately capture lineage information under a variety of conditions of diversification and mass extinction. This suggests that these groups constitute more than mere "taxonomic noise" in this context. But, strictly monophyletic groups perform somewhat better, especially with regard to mass extinctions. However, when low levels of paleontologic sampling are simulated, the veracity of clades deteriorates, especially with respect to diversity, and modeled paraphyletic taxa often capture more information about underlying lineages. Thus, for studies of diversity and taxic evolution in the fossil record, traditional paleontologic genera and families need not be rejected in favor of cladistically-defined taxa.

Open-field behaviour, growth rate and life span in the black-hooded rat.

The life span of the black-hooded rat has been studied in relation to two behavioural variables: (1) habituated level of responding; and (2) emotional reactivity in the open-field arena. The results indicate a relationship between the open-field measures and life span and also with growth rate measures.

The Revised Kendrick Battery: clinical studies.

The former Kendrick Battery--the Synonym Learning Test (SLT) and the Digit Copying Test (DCT)--has been revised. The new version comprises the Object Learning Test (OLT) and the DCT. The discrepancy between Mill Hill and WAIS Verbasl IQs as a diagnostic sign has been eliminated. The Revised Battery has been shown to discriminate between elderly dementing and non-dementing subjects, and also between normal, depressed, and dementing elderly subjects. Utilizing test-retest data it has been found possible to discriminate absolutely between dementing and non-dementing subjects. The reliabilities and validities of the Battery have been ascertained by examining a broad spectrum of elderly subjects: normal, depressed, dementing and institutionalized.

Activity, depression, medication and performance on the Revised Kendrick Battery.

A theory for the cognitive assessment of the elderly has been previously reported (Kendrick, 1972), in which it was predicted that normal and depressed subjects would not differ on cognitive tests unless 'pseudodementia' was indicated. Recent studies involving the Revised Kendrick Battery have led to a modification of the theory. The theory now has to take into account the effects of activity and medication, the former enhancing performance, the latter decreasing it. The previous studies (Kendrick & Post, 1967; Kendrick, 1972), have been re-examined and explanations given for the differences found between studies.
