Jumping through hoops, walking on egg shells: the experiences of nursing students with disabilities.

This study describes the experiences of nursing students with disabilities through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The sample included 10 current students and graduate nurses with physical or auditory impairments and 61 nursing faculty members, staff members, patients, and fellow students. The Colaizzi method of data analysis was modified to include additional information from interviews, observations, and documents. The findings reveal important concerns related to potentially unsafe nursing practices. The findings should assist nursing faculty with admission and retention decisions and development of reasonable accommodations. Recommendations for nursing programs to develop enforceable guidelines for admission are included.

Reye's syndrome: review and update.

Reye's syndrome is a rare but potentially fatal disease that affects all organs of the body, with an especially devastating attack upon the liver and brain. It is characterized by encephalopathy with severe edema of the brain, increased intracranial pressure, hypoglycemia, and fatty infiltration of the liver. It is a two-phase illness, almost always associated with a previous viral infection. Studies strongly support a link between the use of aspirin and Reye's syndrome. Reported cases are on the decline. Recent epidemiologic studies show the incidence for children 10 to 19 years old to be stable, but reduced for younger children. Special attention needs to be directed toward educating adolescents and parents of older children about Reye's syndrome and cautioning against the use of aspirin to treat influenza, upper respiratory infections, or varicella.

Using intuition to define homesickness at summer camp.

Camp nurses are in a unique position to assist in the study of homesickness because they are living the situation. This descriptive study was undertaken because homesickness has not been defined operationally, and nurses do not have a documented set of "defining characteristics" that might be used to make a diagnosis. Twelve camp nurses from eight states completed a questionnaire on homesickness. The nurses surveyed had a consistent set of defining characteristics regarding homesickness. Intuition is reported to play a significant part in the camp nurses's diagnosis of homesickness. Symptoms of homesickness and recommended interventions are included that will ultimately help to promote a more positive camp experience for the camper.
