Search for heavy particles decaying into electron-positron pairs in pp collisions.

We present results of searches for technirho (rho(T)), techniomega (omega(T)), and Z' particles, using the decay channels rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-). The search is based on 124.8 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-1996. In the absence of a signal, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross sections for the processes pp-->rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-) as a function of the mass of the decaying particle. For certain model parameters, we exclude the existence of degenerate rho(T) and omega(T) states with masses below about 200 GeV. We exclude a Z' with mass below 670 GeV, assuming that it has the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson.

Synthesis and structural characterization of functionalized dimeric aluminophosphonates and a monomeric gallophosphonate anion.

Reaction of t-BuP(O)(OSiMe(3))(OH) with Me(3)Al leads to the formation of [Me(2)Al(mu-O)(2)P(OSiMe(3))(t-Bu)](2) (1) whereas Me(2)AlCl reacts with Ph(2)P(O)(OH) to yield [(Cl)(Me)Al(mu-O)(2)PPh(2)](2) (2). These compounds represent the first examples of functionalized dimeric four-ring type aluminophosphonate systems. The double four-ring type gallophosphonate, namely, [t-BuPO(3)GaMe](4), reacts with n-Bu(4)NHF(2) under ambient conditions, resulting in the formation of a monomeric gallophosphonate [n-Bu(4)N][MeGa[t-BuPO(2)(OH)](3)] (3). These derivatives have been adequately characterized using various spectroscopic techniques and X-ray diffraction studies.

Quasi-model-independent search for new high p(T) physics at D0.

We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p(T) physics in approximately 100 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of (s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the D0 experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We systematically analyze many exclusive final states and demonstrate sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale. No evidence of new high p(T) physics is observed.

Ratio of jet cross sections at square root of s = 630 GeV and 1800 GeV.

The D0 Collaboration has measured the inclusive jet cross section in barpp collisions at square root of s = 630 GeV. The results for pseudorapidities (eta)<0.5 are combined with our previous results at square root of s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of cross sections with smaller uncertainties than either individual measurement. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions show excellent agreement with the measurement at 630 GeV; agreement is also satisfactory for the ratio. Specifically, despite a 10% to 15% difference in the absolute magnitude, the dependence of the ratio on jet transverse momentum is very similar for data and theory.

Ratios of multijet Cross Sections in p p collisions at radical(s) = 1.8 TeV.

We report on a study of the ratio of inclusive three-jet to inclusive two-jet production cross sections as a function of total transverse energy in p&pmacr; collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected with the D0 detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurements are used to deduce preferred renormalization scales in perturbative O(alpha(3)(s)) QCD calculations in modeling soft-jet emission.

Inclusive jet production in pp(macro) collisions.

We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-energy ( E(T)) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pp(macro) collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV using 95 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d(2)sigma/(dE(T)d eta) is presented up to eta = 3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD and indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions.

Search for large extra dimensions in dielectron and diphoton production.

We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% C.L. on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions.

Antioxidant defense status of red blood cells of patients with beta-thalassemia and Ebeta-thalassemia.

Anemia in beta-thalassemia is caused by a combination of ineffective erythropoiesis and premature hemolysis of RBC in the peripheral circulation. Excess of the alpha-globin chain present in beta-thalassemic RBC is mainly responsible for oxidative damage of erythrocyte membrane protein. The activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase, and the catalytic activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase, and the concentrations of non-enzymic antioxidants such as reduced glutathione were measured to estimate the status of the antioxidant defense system in the erythrocytes for protection against oxidative stress. The extent of lipid peroxidation was also estimated in thalassemic erythrocytes. Significantly lower activities of reduced glutathione indicate the cell to be in a pro-oxidant state and decreased activity of catalase favors hydrogen peroxide-mediated lipid peroxidation in beta-thalassemic and Ebeta-thalassemic RBC.

Dermatoglyphic analysis in Malay subjects with bipolar mood disorder.

Dermatoglyphic is the study of the epidermal ridges and the pattern formed by them. It may be pointed out that genetic factors have a large share in determining the variations in dermatoglyphics. It is however, suggested by evidence that bipolar mood disorder factors are determined more by genetic factors than by the environmental factors. The experiment has been undertaken to look for the effects of the bipolar mood disorder on dermatoglyphics. The dermatoglyphic characteristics of subjects with bipolar mood disorder when compared with control group revealed significant differences. The radial loop were increased in bipolar mood disorder, but there were little changes in 'atd' angles between normal and bipolar mood disorder.

Application of n-Bu4NHF2 as a fluorinating agent for the preparation of fluoroanions: synthesis and crystal structure of the anions [t-BuPO3AlF2]2(2-), [PhPO3AlF2]2(2-), and [(O-i-Pr)3Ti(mu-F)2(mu-O-i-Pr)Ti(O-i-Pr)3]-.

The first phosphonate anions of aluminum-containing fluorine and an anionic bridged fluoroalkoxy derivative of titanium have been realized using n-Bu4NHF2 as a fluorinating agent in organometallic synthesis. Reactions of [RPO3AlMe]4 [R = Ph (1), t-Bu] with n-Bu4NHF2 yield organic-soluble compounds of the type [n-Bu4N]2[RPO3AlF2]2 [R = Ph (2), t-Bu (3)], whereas the reaction of Ti(O-i-Pr)4 with n-Bu4NHF2 results in the formation of [n-Bu4N][O-i-Pr)3Ti(mu-F)2(mu-O-i-Pr)Ti(O-i-Pr)3] (4). These compounds have been obtained in high yields and have been adequately characterized through spectroscopic techniques and X-ray diffraction studies.

Measurement of the W-->taunu production cross section in pp collisions at square root s=1.8 TeV.

We report on a measurement of sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity (lum) of 18 pb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector during 1994-1995. We find that sigma(pp-->W+X)B(W-->taunu)=2.22+/-0.09 (stat)+/-0. 10 (syst)+/-0.10 (lum) nb. Lepton universality predicts that the ratio of the tau and electron electroweak charged current couplings to the W boson, gWtau/gWe, be unity. We find gWtau/gWe=0.980+/-0.031, in agreement with lepton universality.

Probing Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov dynamics in the dijet cross section at large rapidity intervals in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 and 630 GeV.

Inclusive dijet production at large pseudorapidity intervals (Deltaeta) between the two jets has been suggested as a regime for observing Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) dynamics. We have measured the dijet cross section for large Deltaeta in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1800 and 630 GeV using the D0 detector. The partonic cross section increases strongly with the size of Deltaeta. The observed growth is even stronger than expected on the basis of BFKL resummation in the leading logarithmic approximation. The growth of the partonic cross section can be accommodated with an effective BFKL intercept of alphaBFKL(20 GeV)=1.65+/-0.07.

Synthesis and structure of organic-soluble binuclear molecular phosphonates of tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten.

The reaction of (eta 5-C5Me5)TaMe4 with tert-butylphosphonic acid leads to the formation of a mixture of compounds: [[(eta 5-C5Me5)TaMe][t-BuP(O)(OH)][t-BuP(O)(OH)2]]2(t-BuPO3)2 (1) and [[(eta 5-C5Me5)Ta][t-BuP(O)(OH)2]]2(t-BuPO3)2(mu-O)2 (2). Compound 2 was also obtained by recrystallization of 1 from a THF/hexane mixture. Reaction of (eta 5-C5Me5)MCl4 (M = Mo, W) with PhP(O)(OH)2 yields the binuclear phosphonates [[(eta 5-C5Me5)M][PhP(O)(OH)2]]2(PhPO3)2(mu-O)2 (M = Mo (3); M = W (4)). Compounds 2.THF and 3(.)2.5THF were characterized by single-crystal X-ray studies. The tantalum and molybdenum phosphonates 2.THF and 3(.)2.5THF have different structures as compared to those of the previously reported titanophosphonate cages.

Metal alkoxides as versatile precursors for group 4 phosphonates: synthesis and X-ray structure of a novel organosoluble zirconium phosphonate.

Reactions of Ph2P(O)(OH) and t-BuP(O)(OSiMe3)(OH) with Ti(O-i-Pr)4 in equimolar ratios gave titanium phosphonates of the type [(O-i-Pr)3Ti(mu-O)2PR1R2]2 (1, R1 = R2 = Ph; 2, R1 = t-Bu, R2 = OSiMe3) as colorless crystalline solids in moderate yields. Reactions of Ph2P(O)(OH) and the isopropoxides of zirconium and hafnium resulted in products of the composition [(O-i-Pr)3M(mu-O-i-Pr)2(mu-OPOPh2)M(O-i-Pr)2]Ph2P(O)(OH) (M = Zr (3), Hf (4)) in high yields. The compounds were characterized by 1H, 31P, and 29Si NMR, infrared (IR), and mass spectroscopic (MS) techniques. The molecular structures of 2 and 3 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

Impact of attenuation correction on the accuracy of FDG-PET in patients with abdominal tumors: a free-response ROC analysis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate image quality and lesion detectability with and without attenuation correction in patients with abdominal tumors, using a free-response receiver operating characteristic (FROC) methodology. Thirty-four patients with various abdominal tumors were evaluated (11 men, 23 women, median age 48 years). Whole-body emission scans were performed 68 min (35-102 min) after intravenous injection of 4.3 MBq/kg fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Images were reconstructed using the OS-EM algorithm and corrected for attenuation either using postinjection singles transmission (n=27) or by calculation and body outline (n=7). Total scan duration did not exceed 70 min. Studies were read independently by four observers unaware of any clinical data. The uncorrected (UC) images were systematically read before the attenuation-corrected (AC) images. All studies were given an image quality score ranging from 1 (unreadable) to 5 (excellent). Each focus of increased activity was then localized and given a probability of malignancy using a five-point scale. The average image quality score was similar for both UC and AC images. At the time of the positron emission tomography (PET) scans, 127 lesions (63 liver metastases, 9 retroperitoneal lesions, 50 peritoneal or bowel lesions, and 5 pancreatic carcinomas) were revealed by pathological or correlative studies. The areas under the FROC curves were consistently greater for AC images (range 0.8663-0.8867) than for UC images (range 0.7774 -0.8613). Overall, the difference between the AC images and the UC images was significant (P=0.019). In particular, correction for attenuation increased the sensitivity regardless of the location of the lesions. In conclusion, correction for attenuation significantly improves the diagnostic accuracy of FDG-PET for abdominal staging of neoplasms, without impairing the image quality.

Deferiprone (L1) induced conformation change of hemoglobin: A fluorescence and CD spectroscopic study.

The interaction of deferiprone (1,2-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-pyrid-4-one) L1, the first clinically available oral iron chelator, with the tetrameric allosteric protein hemoglobin from human red blood cells has been investigated spectrofluorometrically and by circular dichroism spectroscopy. The interaction is hydrogenbond like electrostatic in nature, the binding constant being 4.54 x 10(3) M(-1) in 0.15 M NaCl. Circular dichroism studies indicate a conformational change of hemoglobin in presence of deferiprone, helicity of hemoglobin being reduced in presence of increasing concentration of the drug L1.

Arsenic levels in drinking water and the prevalence of skin lesions in West Bengal, India.

BACKGROUND: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between April 1995 and March 1996 to investigate arsenic-associated skin lesions of keratosis and hyperpigmentation in West Bengal, India, and to determine their relationship to arsenic water levels. METHODS: In all, 7683 participants were examined and interviewed, and the arsenic levels in their drinking water measured. RESULTS: Although water concentrations ranged up to 3400 microg/l of arsenic, over 80% of participants were consuming water containing <500 microg/l. The age-adjusted prevalence of keratosis was strongly related to water arsenic levels, rising from zero in the lowest exposure level (<50 microg/l) to 8.3 per 100 for females drinking water containing >800 microg/l, and increasing from 0.2 per 100 in the lowest exposure category to 10.7 per 100 for males in the highest exposure level (> or =800 microg/l). However, 12 cases with keratosis (2 females and 10 males) were drinking water containing <100 microg/l of arsenic. Findings were similar for hyperpigmentation, with strong dose-response relationships. Among those with hyperpigmentation, 29 cases were exposed to drinking water containing <100 microg/l. Calculation by dose per body weight showed that men had roughly two to three times the prevalence of both keratosis and hyperpigmentation compared to women apparently ingesting the same dose of arsenic from drinking water. Subjects who were below 80% of the standard body weight for their age and sex had a 1.6 fold increase in the prevalence of keratoses, suggesting that malnutrition may play a small role in increasing susceptibility. CONCLUSION: The surprising finding of cases who had arsenic-associated skin lesions with apparently low exposure to arsenic in drinking water needs to be confirmed in studies with more detailed exposure assessment. Further research is also needed concerning susceptibility factors which might be present in the exposed population.
