Humoral immunity in Down's syndrome.

Carried out on 57 outpatients, the study was aimed to prove the existence of a disgammaglobulinemia in Down's syndrome. The event could not be attributed to hospitalization. Data indicate increased A and G immunoglobulinemias. In agreement with other authors Ig A level was found to be very high especially after the age of 5. Ig M titre in patients was reduced in comparison with that of the controls, regardless of the age group. Increase timing of IgA and Ig G concentrations tends to be more marked for the Ig A fraction. In patients ranging from 0 to 5 years the Ig A serum level is deficient.

Children aged 10-17 of endogenous unipolar depressive parents and of normal parents. I. Psychopathology rate and relationship of the severity of the psychopathology to familial and environmental variables.

Seventy two children aged 10-17 of 42 endogenous unipolar depressive parents (proband children) and 72 children aged 10-17 of 66 normal parental couples (control children) were studied. Overall rate of psychopathology (disorders present at the time of investigation and one year before) reached 51% in proband children and 29% in control children. Depressive disorder rate reached 10% in proband children and 4% in control children. The sex of the depressive parent did not influence the psychopathology rate in offspring, while the early age of onset of the illness (under 30 years) in parent increased the psychopathology risk in children. The severity of the psychopathology in children defined as functional impairment was significantly dependent on the severity of the depressive illness in proband parent, the presence of psychopathology in the spouse of the depressive parent, the presence of psychopathology in the relatives of both parents, the socio-cultural level of the family and the violence expressed in the familial atmosphere.

The serum creatine-kinase as a biologic marker in major depression.

The paper aims at finding whether the serum creatine-kinase activity may be considered as a biological state or a trait-marker in major depression. The study performed in 76 patients (males and females) led to the conclusion that significant increases of the enzymic activity as compared with controls are present in depressive and not in euthymic patients. The same significant increase was found when comparing the depressive and euthymic patients (but not in the group of monopolar depressive females). There were no significant differences between the monopolar and the bipolar form of the disease. The data reported by the authors show that serum creatine-kinase is not a trait-marker in primary affective illness, but it may be taken for a state-marker in this disease. However, the enzyme is not a biochemical discriminant for the type of depression.

Personality traits of psychotic and nonpsychotic depressive patients.

Personality traits of 46 psychotic depressive patients (PD) were compared with those of two matched control groups of nonpsychotic endogenous (NPED) and nonpsychotic nonendogenous (NPNED) depressive patients. Discriminant analyses using personality variables point to more marked differences between PD and NPNED patients than between PD and NPED ones. PD and NPNED groups had opposite traits on the bipolar personality scales of obsessionality vs. hysteria and self-sufficiency vs. group dependence; anxiety, present in both groups, was more pronounced in the NPNED patients. The dependence, introversion and prominent obsessional traits were the distinctive attributes of PD patients when compared with NPED patients. The results are discussed in terms of the two alternative hypotheses concerning psychotic depression: one considering delusions as a function of depression severity and the other as a distinct pathological trait. Our data do not support the exclusive validity of either of these two models.
