Nursing research--taking an active interest.

This paper discusses the issues raised by the still unfolding transformation of nurse education attitudes to research, from the traditional stance--that it was something that other people do--to the realization that quality research is central to the development of the profession and its competitive survival into the 21st century. In particular, the problems and challenges presented by the Higher Education Funding Council for England research assessment exercise, and the policy of the funding council, are examined. Research in schools of nursing is reviewed under the headings of funding, contracts, support, discipline, publication and staff recruitment and retention, to attempt to identify those approaches most likely to yield a research output of an acceptable volume and quality.

A statistical survey of dioxin-like compounds in United States beef: a progress report.

The USEPA and the USDA have completed the first statistically designed survey of the occurrence and concentration of CDDs and CDFs in the fat of beef animals raised for human consumption in the United States. Back fat was sampled from 63 carcasses at federally inspected slaughter establishments nationwide. The sample design called for sampling beef animal classes in proportion to national annual slaughter statistics. All samples were analyzed using a modification of EPA method 1613, using isotope dilution, High Resolution GC/MS to determine the rate of occurrence of 2,3,7,8-substituted CDDs/CDFS. The whole weight method detection limits ranged from 0.05 ng kg-1 for TCDD to 3 ng kg-1 for OCDD. The results of this survey showed a mean concentration (reported as I-TEQ, lipid adjusted) in U.S. beef animals of 0.35 ng kg-1 and 0.89 ng kg-1 when either non-detects are treated as 0 value or assigned a value of 1/2 the detection limit, respectively.

Quality assurance systems for nurse educators.

This paper seeks to examine two systems designed for thinking about and improving the understanding of quality assurance in nurse educator functions, using Total Quality Management (TQM) principles. The first system is concerned with what needs to be done to realise major goals and objectives. The design parameters, adapted from established quality concepts, are those quality characteristics specifically associated with nurse educator functions--perceived as a set of services. The second system considers how things should be done. How policy statements can be translated into specific educator behaviours and practices that publicly assert institutional values to student customers within a process of continuous quality improvement. Further sections look at the integrated working of the systems and discuss system implications. A final summary exhorts nurse educators to forge closer working relationships with their student customers to fashion a quality service.

Development and validation of an air-to-beef food chain model for dioxin-like compounds.

A model for predicting concentrations of dioxin-like compounds in beef is developed and tested. The key premise of the model is that concentrations of these compounds in air are the source term, or starting point, for estimating beef concentrations. Vapor-phase concentrations transfer to vegetations that cattle consume, and particle-bound concentrations deposit onto soils and these vegetations as well. Congener-specific bioconcentration parameters, coupled with assumptions on cattle diet, transform soil and vegetative concentrations into beef fat concentrations. The premise of the validation exercise is that a profile of typical air concentrations of dioxin-like compounds in a United States rural environment is an appropriate observed independent data set, and that a representative profile of United States beef concentrations of dioxin-like compounds is an appropriate observed dependent result. These data were developed for the validation exercise. An observed concentration of dioxin toxic equivalents in whole beef of 0.48 ng/kg is compared with a predicted 0.36 ng/kg. Principal uncertainties in the approach are identified and discussed. A major finding of this exercise was that vapor phase transfers of dioxin-like compounds to vegetations that cattle consume dominate the estimation of final beef concentrations: over 80% of the modeled beef concentration was attributed to such transfers.

Learning styles of students: development of an eclectic model.

Many researchers have hypothesised that people have an affinity with one of two broadly opposite styles of learning. This paper uses a mainly psychological perspective to examine some teaching and learning styles. Much research into learning styles exhibits original and imaginative approaches to the issues identified by learners and educators, however there is also a degree of recycling of concepts. This paper reports the development of an eclectic model of learning styles designed by considering various concepts, from which four major bipolar theories are refined in the light of sources to identify the core concepts. The selections and exclusions made in the model-building may precipitate dispute. Robust debate is invited, though the eclectic model as it now stands may be thought to offer a serviceable framework for enhancing the sensitivity of nurse educators to students' individuality expressed in their learning styles. How the variety in students' learning styles can be addressed by differing teaching/learning strategies is also discussed. It is concluded that nurse education should strive to move towards matching teaching to learning styles.
