Cervical spondylotic myelopathy with occult foramen magnum meningioma--a case for MRI?

A fatal case of occult foramen magnum meningioma is described which presented with features of cervical myelopathy confirmed by cervical myelogram. Surgical decompression led to initial improvement followed by progressive deterioration and death. Postmortem examination revealed a 4 cm diameter foramen magnum meningioma. The dangers of using only standard radiographic investigations of the cervical cord are discussed.

Isolation of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, from Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae) collected on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Studies were undertaken to monitor for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Gut contents were removed for culturing from seven engorged ticks collected in 1991-1992 including five Ixodes dammini (Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin) and two I. scapularis (Say) removed from a dog that had recently traveled to the southern United States. B. burgdorferi was recovered from one I. dammini that had been removed from a cat in Charlottetown in October 1991. The cat had not traveled off the island. Immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) studies on sera from 75 dogs, 7 cats, and 8 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) collected on Prince Edward Island between 1989 and 1992 revealed one reactor with an IFA titer > or = 1:256. The reactor was a dog with a history of travel to the United States. This report documents the first isolate of B. burgdorferi in Atlantic Canada, possibly because of the introduction of I. dammini on migratory birds. Serological studies do not indicate widespread occurrence of B. burgdorferi on Prince Edward Island.

NMR spectral analysis of cytotoxic ether lipids.

Several cytotoxic ether lipid analogs of platelet activating factor exhibit a wide range of interesting pharmacological properties. Furthermore, at least two members of this family of lipids have progressed to phase I clinical trials as potential cancer chemotherapeutic agents. In spite of the promise that these compounds hold as anticancer drugs, they remain poorly characterized. We report herein the first complete 1H NMR analysis of several palmityl-based ether lipids. In addition, we report the 13C NMR spectral assignments for these lipids, which are based, in part, on both the presence and magnitude of 31P-13C and 14N-13C coupling constants.

Separation of prostaglandins, thromboxane, hydroxy fatty acids and arachidonic acid by high pressure liquid chromatography.

Separation of the major metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA) produced by the cyclo-oxygenase and the lipoxygenases was achieved by using reverse phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. Prostaglandins (PGs), thromboxane B2 (TXB2), and AA were separated on a C-18 radial compression column. An initial isocratic elution resolved the PGs and TXB2 which was followed by a linear gradient in order to elute AA. Variations of the gradient elution shape were required to permit the separation of 12-L-hydroxy-5,8,10-heptadecatrienoic acid, 5-12 and 15-hydroxy-5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid. The recovery of the labeled AA and its metabolites was investigated. Use of these separation methods and radiolabeled substrates should permit investigators to obtain reproducibly in one chromatographic run adequate separation and quantitation of both PGs and hydroxy fatty acid systems.
