Two decades of change: Glenside Hospital population surveys 1960-80.

Results of the fifth quinquennial survey of the patients of Glenside Hospital, Bristol, when compared with five yearly surveys over the past 20 years, show that the "run-down" of the hospital continues. There is still an accumulation of long-stay patients, mainly for non-medical reasons. They remain in hospital because of the failure to provide community facilities adequate to their needs. It is suggested that local authorities will never be able to cope with them and that the NHS should be enabled to extend their hospital services into "nursing homes" in the community.

'Dissolution of the mental hospital': fifteen years on.

The pattern of decline of a mental hospital population over fifteen years is described. Continuing problems are commented on, particularly the presence of 'old' long-stay patients and the accumulation of 'new chronic patients'. The number of beds required for each of these categories is estimated. The dissolution of the mental hospital service by degradation is deplored, and a suggestion is made that some of the good points of the old service might be salvaged before it is too late.

Sheltered groups in open industry. A new approach to training and to employment.

The Department of Employment has now accepted that groups working under supervision in open industry are superior to sheltered workshops in the management and retraining of the disabled. A scheme along these lines has been organised in Bristol for twelve years, and experience with the scheme suggests that, for former patients of mental hospitals, the approach is the right one. It is most acceptable to the patient and has the advantage of giving the patient the best chance of becoming self-sufficient.

Bristol Industrial Therapy Housing Association: a contribution to domestic resettlement.

A housing association for the rehabilitation of adults suffering from psychiatric illness now has six council houses, a former private hotel, and two large houses-providing a total of 100 places. The cost of full board and lodging is about pound6.00 a week; the association shows a small profit; and virtually all the residents are in open or sheltered work.
