Antiferromagnetic order induced by an applied magnetic field in a high-temperature superconductor.

One view of the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) copper oxide superconductors is that they are conventional superconductors where the pairing occurs between weakly interacting quasiparticles (corresponding to the electrons in ordinary metals), although the theory has to be pushed to its limit. An alternative view is that the electrons organize into collective textures (for example, charge and spin stripes) which cannot be 'mapped' onto the electrons in ordinary metals. Understanding the properties of the material would then need quantum field theories of objects such as textures and strings, rather than point-like electrons. In an external magnetic field, magnetic flux penetrates type II superconductors via vortices, each carrying one flux quantum. The vortices form lattices of resistive material embedded in the non-resistive superconductor, and can reveal the nature of the ground state-for example, a conventional metal or an ordered, striped phase-which would have appeared had superconductivity not intervened, and which provides the best starting point for a pairing theory. Here we report that for one high-Tc superconductor, the applied field that imposes the vortex lattice also induces 'striped' antiferromagnetic order. Ordinary quasiparticle models can account for neither the strength of the order nor the nearly field-independent antiferromagnetic transition temperature observed in our measurements.

Excitations of the field-induced quantum soliton lattice in CuGeO(3).

The incommensurate magnetic soliton lattice in the high-field phase of a spin-Peierls system results from quantum fluctuations. We have used neutron scattering techniques to study CuGeO(3), allowing us to obtain the first complete characterization of the excitations of the soliton lattice. Three distinct excitation branches are observed, all of which are gapped. The two highest energy modes have minimum gaps at the commensurate wave vector and correspond to the creation or annihilation of soliton pairs. The third mode is incommensurate and is discussed in relation to theoretical predictions.

X-ray resonant scattering study of the quadrupolar order in UPd3.

Quadrupolar ordering in a 5f electron system has been observed directly for the first time, using x-ray scattering techniques. In UPd (3) at low temperatures satellite peaks appear at (1,0,l) (orthorhombic notation) with l odd and even. Both sets of peaks show a resonant enhancement of the scattering at the M(IV) edge of U. At resonance, the dominant scattering of the l odd peaks occurs in the unrotated polarization channel, whereas for l even a significant rotated component is found. These results are discussed in terms of possible structures of the antiferroquadrupolar phases.

Spin correlations in Ho2Ti2O7: a dipolar spin ice system.

The pyrochlore material Ho2Ti2O7 has been suggested to show "spin ice" behavior. We present neutron scattering and specific heat results that establish unambiguously that Ho2Ti2O7 exhibits spin ice correlations at low temperature. Diffuse magnetic neutron scattering is quite well described by a nearest neighbor spin ice model and very accurately described by a dipolar spin ice model. The heat capacity is well accounted for by the sum of a dipolar spin ice contribution and an expected nuclear spin contribution, known to exist in other Ho3+ salts. These results settle the question of the nature of the low temperature spin correlations in Ho2Ti2O7 for which contradictory claims have been made.

Spin dynamics of the 2D spin 1/2 quantum antiferromagnet copper deuteroformate tetradeuterate (CFTD).

The magnetic excitation spectrum in the two-dimensional (2D) S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet copper deuteroformate tetradeuterate has been measured for temperatures up to T approximately J/2, where J = 6.31+/-0.02 meV is the 2D exchange coupling. For T<<J, a dispersion of the zone boundary energy is observed, which is attributed to a wave vector dependent quantum renormalization. At higher temperatures, spin-wavelike excitations persist, but are found to broaden and soften. By combining our data with numerical calculations, and with existing theoretical work, a consistent description of the behavior of the model system is found over the whole temperature interval investigated.

Multiparticle states in the S = 1 chain system CsNiCl3.

A continuum of magnetic states has been observed by neutron scattering from the spin-1 chain compound CsNiCl3 in its disordered gapped one-dimensional phase. Results using both triple-axis and time-of-flight spectrometers show that around the antiferromagnetic point Qc = pi, the continuum lies higher in energy than the Haldane gapped excitations. At 6 K the integrated intensity of the continuum is about 12(2)% of the total spectral weight. This result is considerably larger than the 1%-3% weight predicted by the nonlinear sigma model for the three-particle continuum.

Spins in the vortices of a high-temperature superconductor.

Neutron scattering is used to characterize the magnetism of the vortices for the optimally doped high-temperature superconductor La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 (x = 0.163) in an applied magnetic field. As temperature is reduced, low-frequency spin fluctuations first disappear with the loss of vortex mobility, but then reappear. We find that the vortex state can be regarded as an inhomogeneous mixture of a superconducting spin fluid and a material containing a nearly ordered antiferromagnet. These experiments show that as for many other properties of cuprate superconductors, the important underlying microscopic forces are magnetic.
