Postoperative analgesia with controlled-release morphine sulphate: comparison with intramuscular morphine.

Fifty patients undergoing hysterectomy or cholecystectomy took part in a trail of postoperative analgesia provided by either intramuscular morphine or controlled-release morphine sulphate tablets orally. Respiratory function and plasma catecholamine concentrations were measured after operation and pain was assessed by using a linear analogue scoring method. Controlled-release morphine sulphate produced comparable pain relief with that of intramuscular morphine, and depression of respiratory function after operation was similar with the two analgesic regimens. The mean total dose of drug per patient given over 48 h to patients undergoing hysterectomy was 115 mg for morphine sulphate and 53 mg for morphine. Patients undergoing cholecystectomy received 130 mg morphine sulphate or 76 mg morphine. There was more sedation after operation in those patients undergoing hysterectomy who received morphine sulphate tablets. Morphine sulphate tablets produced satisfactory postoperative analgesia compared with intramuscular morphine: both regimens were acceptable to the patients.

Enhancement of histidine and one-carbon metabolism in rats fed high levels of retinol.

Histidine metabolism was studied in rats fed 10% casein diets supplemented with 1000 IU of retinol/g concurrent with or previous to exposure to high levels of dietary histidine (1% or 2%). When a retinol-supplemented 10% casein + 1% histidine diet was fed ad libitum for 21 days, urinary excretion of formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) was decreased by 50-70% over the entire period and plasma histidine was reduced by 30-70% for 16 days compared to rats receiving 10% casein + 1% histidine with normal levels of retinol. Rats pretreated for 10 days with a 10% casein diet supplemented with high levels of retinol oxidized 30% more L-[ring-2-14C]histidine to 14CO2 and excreted 76% less of the administered dose as urinary FIGLU compared to control rats not pretreated with high levels of retinol. Depression in growth due to supplementation of a 10% casein diet with 1% histidine were also partially alleviated in rats that were first pretreated with retinol. Activities of histidase, urocanase, and formiminoglutamic acid formiminotransferase (FIGLU transferase) were unaffected by retinol supplementation. The results suggest that retinol supplementation enhances histidine catabolism by exerting a change on one-carbon metabolism.

Effect of oral diazepam on lower oesophageal sphincter pressure.

The effect of diazepam 10 mg orally was investigated on lower oesophageal sphincter pressure in a random double-blind study of nine healthy volunteers. Barrier pressure decreased to a small but statistically significant extent. The reduction in barrier pressure was not related to the level of drowsiness.

[Kinetics of the binding 14C-DDT-and haemolymph lipoproteins of Periplaneta americana (author's transl)].

A study of the kinetics of the complexation of the 14C-DDT and lipoproteins of the haemolymph of Periplaneta americana (L.) was made, the method employed was that described by WINTER et alii (7). It was found that the above complex was unstable when kept at low temperatures (5 degrees) for more than twenty four hours; the incorporation of 14C-DDT in the proteic fraction increased with temperature up to 42 degrees C, and at least 6 hours of incubation were necessary to bind the 14C-DDT to the lipoprotein.

[Alteration of the ATP-ase Mg++ and Mg++ Na+ K+ activities of the central nervous system of Periplaneta americana L. after sonification. (author's transl].

A prolonged ultrasonic homogenization of a Periplaneta americana L. suspension of ganglia in a buffer solution pH 7,6 when compared with a Potter Elvehjem homogenization shows a marked reduction of Mg++ and (Mg++ + Na+ + K+) ATPase activities. Mg++ ATPase was not modified while the (Mg++ + Na+ + K+) ATPase was completely inhibited after 30 second ultrasonic homogenization. This probably results from an enzyme structure alteration caused by the ultrasonic treatment.

Adenosine Triphosphatases↗

[Peripherial ATP-ases in the different components of the central nervous system of Periplaneta americana L. (author's transl)].

A smaller ATP-ase activity in the abdominal nerve cord of the Periplaneta americana L. was observed when compared by peripheral area with ganglia activity of the central nervous system which have more complex physiological functions. There was no significant difference in the enzyme distribution in the pro, meso, metatoraxic, subesophageal ganglia and the sixth abdominal ganglion.
