Isolation of the trichomonad Tetratrichomonas buttreyi (Hibler et al., 1960) Honigberg, 1963 in bovine diarrhoeic faeces.

A trichomonad was found in the faeces of a heifer with watery diarrhoea. It was classified as Tetratrichomonas buttreyi according to its morphology as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. This flagellate was successfully maintained in a cysteine-peptone-liver medium. It is, to our knowledge, the first report of Tetratrichomonas buttreyi in Spain. This trichomonad appears to be a nonpathogenic commensal which often proliferates in fluid faeces.

Prevalence of sarcoptic mange in fattening pigs sacrificed in a slaughterhouse of northeastern Spain.

A study was conducted in fattening pigs from NE Spain to determine the prevalence of sarcoptic mange. Pigs were sacrificed in a slaughterhouse in the province of Barcelona (Catalonia, NE Spain) in November 1990, April 1991, and October 1991. From 7906 pigs slaughtered on those dates, 818 ear scrapings were taken. The survey results indicate that 276 (33.7%) of 818 pigs sampled from 58 (86.6%) of 67 herds were positive for Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer). The presence of Sarcoptes-induced skin lesions was examined in 816 pigs. Of the 660 pigs showing skin lesions, 244 (37.0%) were positive for mites. A sucrose flotation-concentration method was more effective than a direct examination technique to detect S. scabiei mites.

[Rounded nodular atelectasis: computerized tomography and magnetic resonance appearances].

Rounded atelectasis is a rare form of lung collapse whose X-ray appearance can be confused with that of tumors, especially nodular forms. We studied 14 such lesions with computerized tomography, finding that all were rounded and subpleural, specifically in the thickened pleura visceralis. The radiological sign that was most useful for diagnosis was the arc of the proximal vessels in the direction of the lesion. Such an arc was present in all the cases we reviewed. Other radiological signs such as brightness of the surrounding parenchyma, loss of volume in the affected lobe and the presence of air bronchogram were found in 10, 7 and 7 patients, respectively. When the X-ray appearance clearly indicates a diagnosis of rounded nodular atelectasis, we recommend that no additional diagnostic procedure be made. Three lesions in our sample were studied by magnetic resonance, which revealed the characteristic hypointense curves in all sequences done on 2 patients. The usefulness of computerized tomography in the diagnosis of this entity relegates magnetic resonance to a second plane.

Hepatic mesenchymal sarcoma: MRI findings.

Hepatic undifferentiated mesenchymal sarcoma is a rare pediatric malignant neoplasm. We present three children, aged 7, 8, and 12 years, with this tumor. Clinical presentation was abdominal pain, palpable mass, asthenia, anorexia, and weight loss. One had jaundice. All three lesions were detected on ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI localized the lesions more accurately than the other methods, with good resectability correlation. On MRI, these tumors were markedly hyperintense on long TR/TE spin-echo (SE) and short-time inversion recovery (STIR) sequences. This was due to the cystic areas with myxoid material and necrosis. The internal separations were hypointense on these sequences. On short TR/TE SE sequences the lesions presented a fibrous pseudocapsule (two cases), and internal hyperintense areas representing hemorrhage (two cases). MRI also detected vascular invasion (one case), biliary obstruction (one case), and hilar adenopathies (one case). The combination of hemorrhage (hyperintense on short TR/TE SE) and cystic or myxoid components (markedly hyperintense on long TR/TE SE and STIR sequences) is common in this tumor.

[Detection of cytomegalovirus in urine by the shell-vial technique: usefulness of diluting the sample].

To assess the toxicity of urine samples on human fibroblast cell monolayer using Shell-vial technique for cytomegalovirus antigen detection. A total of 227 urine samples were processed, inoculated on Shell-vial simultaneously, being either diluted (1:1) and non diluted in transport media. After 24-48 hours incubation, the fibroblast cells monolayer was stained using fluorescein-marked monoclonal anti-cytomegalovirus antibodies. Cytomegalovirus was detected in 9.6% of samples inoculated with diluted urine, and in 5.2% of samples inoculated with non-diluted urine. Destruction of monolayer cells was seen in 13.2 and 22.4, respectively. With Shell-vial technique for detecting cytomegalovirus in urine samples, a high number of positive results was obtained using diluted urine. Also a significant minor destruction of cells monolayer was observed with the same inoculum.

[Listeriosis in the adult: presentation of 14 cases].

The incidence of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) infection has increased in recent years, particularly in immunocompromised patients or in those with severe underlying diseases. However, it still is an unusual pathogen. In the present study we report 14 cases of listeriosis in adults, seen from 1978 to 1988. The organism was isolated from the blood in 10 instances, from cerebrospinal fluid in 5, and from a cervical abscess in one. The ages of the patients ranged from 29 to 81 years and there was a clear male predominance. In all cases except in one there was a previous underlying disease, and four had received immunosuppressant therapy. Listeria monocytogenes was sensitive to ampicillin, erythromycin, vancomycin, gentamicin, rifampicin, ticarcillin, azlocillin, mezlocillin and tetracyclines.

[Salmonella: resistance to 3 antibiotics of choice].

The resistances of 1,156 stocks of Salmonella isolated between 1980-1981 were compared with the 1,528 stocks of Salmonella obtained between 1986-1987 against three elective antibiotics such as ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and cotrimoxazole. The number of resistant stocks and the resistances to the above antibiotics are increasing (9.7% during the first period and 13.6% during the second, p = 0.002). Resistances to multiple agents increased from 1.8% to 4.38% (p = 0.0006). During the period of 1986-1987 there were stocks resistant to the three studied antibiotics.
