Immunological analysis of women with repeated spontaneous abortions.

The study deals with 9 women with recurrent abortions who do not possess the blocking factor which is present during normal pregnancy and which inhibits, nonspecifically, a cellular cytotoxicity reaction in vitro. Electrophoresis of the women's serum revealed an abnormal glycoprotein, migrating in the alpha-globulin zone, which gives a precipitate with an anti-gamma-globulin serum after mercaptoethanol treatment. These last two findings may indicate a possible abortion.

Absence of a factor blocking a cellular cytotoxicity reaction in the serum of women with recurrent abortions.

The serum of pregnant women contains a non-specific immunosuppressive factor able to block an in vitro cellular cytotoxicity reaction. This activity increases during the first trimester and persists for 3 months after delivery. The factor is active in dilution. Ten women who had recurrent abortions were typed for HLA antigens and were found to share several antigens with their husband. In all these women, the 'blocking factor' was absent from their serum. The absence of the 'blocking factor' could be used as a clinical test to predict spontaneous abortion.

[Isolation from a pregnant woman of a serum protein responsible for inhibiting an in vitro cytotoxicity reaction].

A non specific immunosupressive factor able to block an in vitro cytotoxicity reaction is demonstrated in the serum of pregnant women. A solution containing this blocking factor is obtained by gel filtration and precipitation of plasma by polyethylene glycol 4 000. Then after immunisation of rabbits the immune serum can be used for affinity chromatography. An alpha 2 glycoprotein has been separated which inhibits the in vitro cytotoxicity reaction and whose molecular weight determined by gel filtration and polyacrylamide gel is about 200 000 daltons.

Identification of a factor blocking a cellular cytotoxicity reaction in pregnant serum.

A blocking factor present in the serum of pregnant women is able to inhibit non-specifically a cellular cytotoxicity reaction. It is a glycoprotein, migrating in the alpha-globulin region with a molecular weight of about 210,000 daltons. Its absence from the serum of women with recurrent abortions could predict the outcome of pregnancy.

[Cell mediated immunity in a mercury nephrotic syndrome (author's transl)].

A case of extramembranous glomerulonephritis seen in a patient in contact with mercury diodide is reported. The responsibility of mercury in this occurrence of this nephropathy is confirmed by positive tests exploring cell mediated immunity. The other possible actions of mercury are described: modifications in renal tubular antigen, or in a tissue or serum protein, with antibody production and secondary apparition of immune complexes which deposit in the glomerules.

[Immunologic phenomena in habitual abortion].

12 women with recurrent abortions are investigated for various immunological parameters. Couples studied shared several HLA antigens, those women do not develop HLA' antibodies and cellular cytotoxicity against their husband. Their serum has an abnormal glycoprotein, migrating in the alpha globulin zone, precipitating with anti beta globulin serum. The women studied with recurrent abortions never possessed the Blocking Factor present in the serum of pregnant women, able to inhibit a cellular cytotoxicity reaction in vitro. It is proposed a reliable and simple test which could inform on the outcome of abortions.

[In vitro study of comparative immunosuppressive activity of sera from pregnant women on an in vitro cellular cytotoxic reaction].

By means of an adaptation of a well-known in vitro cellular cytotoxic reaction we can demonstrate: 1. a strong immunosuppressive non-specific activity of sera from pregnant women; 2. a decrease or an absence of immunosuppressive activity of sera from pregnant women submitted to several spontaneous abortions; 3. we propose a reliable and simple test allowing us to predict the outcome of abortions.

[Antibody fixation on cell nucleus in culture].

Anti-nuclear antibodies which have a speckled nuclear fluorescent pattern (anti-RNP) have been incubated with various cell-cultures: epidermis, placentas, Hela cells, lymphoblasts. These antibodies are fixed in nuclei in vitro but do not affect every nuclear cell. Regulatory factors as mitosis seem to interfere.
