PURPOSE: To study the effects of transcleral cryotherapy and laser photocoagulation of anterior retina on ocular growth. METHODS: Twenty-one rabbits underwent transcleral cryotherapy or indirect ophthalmoscopic laser photocoagulation of the anterior retina on one of their eyes between 2 and 8 weeks of age. RESULTS: After the rabbits were killed between 3 and 6 months of age, treated rabbit eyes were found to be significantly smaller in axial length (P < 0.001), average equatorial diameter (P < 0.01), average corneal diameter (P < 0.05), and in total ocular volume (P < 0.01). The difference in eye size was not due to lowered intraocular pressure. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrate that these treatments slow growth of both the anterior and posterior segment of rabbit eyes.

To investigate whether growth factors derived from T cells in psoriatic lesions are able to stimulate keratinocyte growth, T-cell lines were initiated from lesional psoriasis skin and cloned by limiting dilution. Eight clones with good proliferative capacity out of 40 clones from one patient were stimulated. After 24 h, the conditioned medium was harvested and the growth modulatory effect of the conditioned medium on keratinocytes was assessed. Seven of the eight T-cell clones stimulated keratinocyte growth to an extent ranging from 22% +/- 19 to 64% +/- 9 (mean +/- SD of three experiments) of maximal inducible keratinocyte growth, and one T-cell clone had no effect (-5% +/- 2) on keratinocyte growth. Keratinocyte growth was also induced by T-cell clones obtained from two other patients. Several cytokines were tested in this system to determine which T-cell growth factor may induce the keratinocyte growth. None of the cytokines interferon-g, transforming growth factor-beta, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-3, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, or granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor alone was found to possibly be responsible for the T-cell-induced keratinocyte growth. Thus the nature of the T-cell keratinocyte growth-promoting stimulus remains to be elucidated.
Lithium treatment, an approach with well documented efficacy, has recently been losing its treatment value. Lithium continues working, however, for those patients for whom it was proven efficacious; that is, most patients with primary episodic affective disorders. Such responders to lithium prophylaxis can be reliably identified beforehand by a comprehensive clinical assessment. The explanation for the paradox of lithium's lost efficacy lies mostly in the educational bias against a comprehensive patient assessment, and in the shift in diagnostic fashion favouring affective disorders and the treatment methods associated with them in the clinicians' minds.

The existence of a superior intracapsular ligament within the sacroiliac joint has been disputed for years. This study notes that the dissection technique used to open the sacroiliac joint is of critical importance in finding this ligament. A dissection technique that emphasizes an inferior approach to the joint cavity is described. A superior intracapsular ligament of the sacroiliac joint (Illi's ligament) is noted with a 75% frequency in dissected cadavers. Illi's model for motion of the sacrum was based partially on the function of this ligament. The findings of this study suggest that current models of motion at the sacroiliac joint must include the presence of a superior intracapsular ligament.

1. The actions of angiotensin II, bradykinin, oxytocin, arginine vasopressin, relaxin, serotonin and the prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha were examined on preparations of costo-uterine muscle from stilboestrol-treated rats. 2. All the agonists, except relaxin, when used in concentrations which contract the rat uterus, also produced contractions of costo-uterine muscles. Concentration-response curves were steep and maximal responses to the agonists were comparable. The negative log molar EC50 values were: serotonin, 6.5; angiotensin II, 8.8; bradykinin, 8.4; PGE2, 8.3; PGF2 alpha, 7.1. The EC50 values (units/L) for oxytocin and vasopressin were 4.4 and 2.7 respectively. 3. Indomethacin (2.8 or 5 mumol/L) did not decrease the contractile effects of the peptides or serotonin. The effects of serotonin were reduced, but not reversed, by methysergide (0.94 mumol/L). 4. Porcine relaxin inhibited field stimulation-induced contractions of costo-uterine muscle and uterine horns from immature rats pretreated with oestradiol cypionate and from stilboestrol-treated mature rats. It was much less potent, and its effects were less clearly concentration-related, on costo-uterine muscle. 5. The inhibitory effects of relaxin on the uterus were unaffected by propranolol (1 mumol/L), confirming that on this tissue relaxin acts independently of the release of catecholamines. Progesterone (30 mumol/L) was also without effect on the action of relaxin on the uterus. 6. These results taken together indicate that the costo-uterine muscle of the rat: (i) contracts in response to serotonin and the peptides angiotensin II, arginine vasopressin, bradykinin and oxytocin independently of the release of the contractile prostaglandins F2 alpha and E2; and (ii) in contrast to the uterus, may lack a significant population of receptors for relaxin.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
