Heterogeneity among strains of Mycoplasmatales virus-laidlawii 2.

Five isolates of Mycoplasmatales virus-laidlawii 2 (MV-L2) derived from bovine strains of Acholeplasma laidlawii were shown to differ in host range, plaque morphology and neutralization tests with MV-L2 antiserum. Cross-testing using virus resistant clones of A. laidlawii confirmed the heterogeneity of this group. Adaptation of viruses to sub-optimal host was demonstrated.

Acholeplasma laidlawii↗

A solid medium for culture and identification of human T-mycoplasmas.

A solid urea-containing medium buffered to pH 6.5 with a suitable mixture of KH2PO4 and Na2HPO4 produced enlarged T-mycoplasma colonies containing a white precipitate. This was absent from M. hominis colonies. The medium can be used for the isolation and identification of T-mycoplasmas.

A method for determining the utilisation of glucose by mycoplasmas.

A technique for measuring glucose utilisation by mycoplasmas, in which the disappearance of glucose is monitored by the glucose-oxidase method, is proposed as an alternative to the pH method. For maximum reliability the number of organisms in the test suspension must exceed a critical minimum value. Differences in efficiency of glucose utilisation were demonstrated between species of Mycoplasma and Acholeplasma.
