Adhesion to dentin with and without smear layer under varying degrees of wetness.

The bond strengths of glass ionomer cements to prepared dentin ranged between 2.1 and 4.7 MPa for all test conditions and did not appear to be adversely affected by the presence of fluid under physiologic pressure or by the presence or absence of a smear layer. On the other hand, the resin dentin adhesive was adversely affected by the presence of moisture (1 +/- 1.3 MPa when the tubules were full of fluid and under pressure; 9.4 +/- 10.6 MPa when the tubules were full of fluid but not under pressure; and 18.3 +/- 7.6 MPa when the tubules were empty.

Effects of time after extraction and depth of dentin on resin dentin adhesives.

An adhesive shear test has proved to be reproducible and potentially usable for screening new systems. When evaluating current resin dentin adhesives, it appears that the length of time elapsed since extraction of the tooth has little effect on adhesion. Conversely, adhesion significantly decreases as the pulp is approached.

The continued in vivo evaluation of the wear of restorative resins.

This study reports on the 3-year results of a method designed to measure the in vivo wear rates of resin systems in denture teeth. Adaptic and Profile showed the most amounts of wear, followed by Finesse, Miradapt, and Isopast. The least amounts of wear were seen with Isosit and Silar. The similarity to the magnitudes of wear reported in other studies suggests the appropriateness of using this technique.

Clinical evaluation of cement solubility.

This study evaluated a method of comparing the in vivo solubility of permanent luting cements. The cements were carried in crypts placed in complete dentures. A vented cover allowed for free access of fluids. Nine cements were evaluated, and cement loss was measured at 6 months. The glass ionomer (at two powder-liquid ratios) and silicophosphate cements demonstrated an approximately equal amount of solubility, which was less than for the other cements tested. The results of this study are in fairly close agreement with two previously published studies on the clinical solubility of cements.
