[Laser micro-spectroanalytical determinations of aluminum in lumbar vertebrae of non-nephrectomized and 5/6 nephrectomized rats after application of dose- and time-dependent aluminum chloride solutions].

In order to obtain further informations on the mode of action of Al, we carried out lasermicroanalytical determinations (LMA) of Aluminium (Al) on different parts of lumbar vertebrae in 54 non-nephrectomized rats and 54 ones 5/6 nephrectomized which were divided in 3 groups. The animals were treated with solutions of physiological NaCl in the control group (0.25 ml/100 g b.w.) and different Al-doses (0.05 and 0.5 mg/kg b.w.) intraperitoneally and daily for 4, 8, and 12 weeks. The results were compared with those of histochemical Al-detections by the method of IRWIN (1955). Lumbar vertebrae of the non-nephrectomized rats in the control group did not contain Al by LMA- and histochemical determination investigated in all the time intervals. Al-doses of 0.05 mg/100 g b.w. induced only a positive Al-proof 12 weeks after the beginning of the injections in the 5/6 nephrectomized animals by LMA, whereas Al-doses 10 times higher effected an Al-deposit of different concentration in the substance compact and substance spongioid of the lumbar body of vertebrae from the 4th week in the 5/6 nephrectomized and the 8th in the non-nephrectomized rats. The sensitiveness of the Al-detection by LMA was higher in comparison with the histochemical procedure, and an Al-accumulation in the lumbar vertebrae of the 5/6 nephrectomized rats is distinctly earlier than in those of non-nephrectomized animals.

Diagnosis, Differential

[The azygos vein lobe and its clinical significance (author's transl)].

The incidence and development on the azygos vein lobe are reviewed briefly. Examination of 10 000 radiographs of normal people showed that it occurred in 0,7% of cases. The clinical significance of the azygos vein lobe is discussed. In particular it may important in evaluating post-operative radiographs of patients in intensive care.

Azygos Vein

[Estimation of organ dose during radiological and computer tomographic examinations with calculations of the somatically significant doses (author's transl)].

The risks from radiation exposure during radiological diagnosis has usually been estimated in relation to genetic changes. Relevant information has been expressed as the genetically significant dose. In this paper we attempt to produce an analogous measure for evaluating the somatic risk in the form of a somatically significant dose index for radiological and CT examinations. It is shown that, for both types of examination, the two risk factors may be entirely different.

Female

[Examinations of the pulmonary function of untrained and physically trained old men (author's transl)].

In tests there were determined the vital capacity and absolute and relative seconds capacity of 180 physical-trained sportsmen aged 55 to 89 and of 175 untrained, but clinically healthy test persons. The results of the different age-intervals are compared statistically. It was noticed, that vital capacity and absolute seconds-capacity of both groups decrease statistically significant with the age. Vital capacity and seconds capacity are in all age-intervals on a higher level with the trained sportsmen than the control group. The relative seconds-capacity showed no significant difference between the two groups. There is a clear statistic connexion between the vital capacity and the time obtained in a 5 000 meters run. One can suppose that in contrast to juvenile sportsmen a good pulmonary function is a contributory determinant of the performance of old sportsmen.

Age Factors

[X-rays in the eye of the general public. A survey of 181 interviews with office personnel (author's transl)].

For a pilot study, a random sample of 181 office personnel in steel companies were interviewed about their knowledge and feelings on X-rays and other forms of ionizing radiation. The general knowledge about the beneficial and detrimental aspects of X-rays was good, with education at school and news media reports being the main sources of information (70%). In general, the news media are considered to give objective and correct reports on this matter. 85% of the interviewed held ionizing radiation to be at least somewhat dangerous. Those with higher education (college/university) were significantly more vocal on the dangerous aspects. Concerning personal fear of X-rays, 30% were at least somewhat fearful. A significant correlation was found between statements on the dangerous aspects and subjective feelings of fear (anxiety). Interestingly, there was no correlation between general fearfulness (manifest anxiety) and fear of X-rays.

Adult

[Obstruction of the hepatic portion of the inferior vena cava: morphological characteristics and surgical treatment (author's transl)].

Operable obstructions of the hepatic portion of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rare but probably diagnosed more frequently nowadays. Since 1969 we operated 2 patients, one of them twice. Concerning to these cases the problems of diagnosis, morphology and surgical treatment are discussed. In the patient, who were operated twice, we found the combination - which has not been reported in medical literature yet - of a membranous stenosis of the hepatic portion of the IVC and a large Eustachian valve obstructing the IVC.

Budd-Chiari Syndrome

[Neutron dosimetry in a 17-MeV betatron].

Measurements of neutron radiation around the 17 MeV betatron at the radiation clinic of the University Düsseldorf are reported. Two figures present isodose distributions of neutrons under different conditions of irradiation.

Methods

[A comparison of antibiotic resistance patterns and pyocine types between strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from animal and human sources (author's transl)].

291 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from human bacteriological samples were compared with 102 strains which had been isolated from animals for frequency of pyocine-types and patterns of antibiotic resistance. 146 strains had been isolated from hospitalized patients and 145 from out-patients. More strains of animal origin were sensitive to carbenicillin and tetracyclines compared to strains of human origin. Since the frequency of different pyocine-types is the same in all three groups, it is concluded, that antibiotic resistance may be transferred from man to animal and vice versa via transfer of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Animals

[Lymph flow disorders following arterial surgery of the leg].

In a series of 342 arterial reconstructions of the iliacolic to popliteal arteries 24 patients with lymph vessel damage were observed. The diagnosis of lymphedema was established in 18 patients by clinical findings and in 2 of them the diagnosis was confirmed by lymphography with followup of 1 year. Three patients developed an internal lymphogenic cyst, 3 showed an external lymph fistula, and 1 patient developed an infection of a dacron bifurcation graft. The infection occurred when an additional occlusion of the left femoral artery was bypassed with an autologous saphenous vein graft and a lymph cyst in the groin, which was excised several times, became infected. The patient was treated successfully by excising the graft and performing an axillofemoral bypass. Although cases of surgical damage to lymph vessels following arterial reconstructions are rare in the literature, it is assumed that this complication occurs more often than reported, because of lack of lymphographic information.
