Lacunar thalamic infarcts and amnesia.

Six cases with CT scan evidence of paramedian thalamic lacunar infarcts in the region of the paramedian thalamic arteries (4 unilateral left and 2 bilateral) are described. The main acute symptoms included disorders of consciousness, hypersomnia and sometimes vertical gaze paresis. An amnesic syndrome of variable degree and duration was observed in all cases, and in 1 of them was still present 2 years after the onset. In addition, we report a case of lateral thalamic infarction, which showed a predominantly aphasic (transcortical sensory type) clinical picture.

Chorea induced by the use of oral contraceptives. Report of a case and review of the literature.

A rare complication of oral contraceptive therapy is the induction of chorea. We describe the case-history of a young woman who developed generalized chorea while receiving a low-dose estrogen-containing contraceptive. Dyskinesia resolved upon discontinuing the medication and after a brief treatment with an antidopaminergic agent. The literature of chorea associated with oral contraceptives and the different hypotheses about its pathogenesis are reviewed.

Binding of prolactin by fetal human lung cell membrane fractions.

PRL binding capacity to cell membrane fraction was studied in lung tissues obtained from 4 human fetuses or newborn infants. One of the fetuses was a stillborn delivered at 33 weeks of gestation. The newborn infants died for unknown causes within 24 h after birth. The gestational age was 20, 39 and 41 weeks. The cell membrane fraction was prepared by ultracentrifugation. binding capacity and affinity constants were calculated according to athe Scatchard method. No significant specific binding of PRL to lung tissue from the stillborn fetus was observed, while for the other 3 newborn infants the binding capacity was 5.7, 7.4 and 9.6 fmol PRL bound/mg of membrane protein, respectively. The affinity constants were in the order of 10(10) M-1. these preliminary results show that human neonatal lung has receptors for PRL and suggest that PRL itself may be involved in the lung maturation.

Experimental vitreous replacement with perfluorophenanthrene.

PURPOSE: We studied the toxicity of perfluorophenanthrene (PFP), used as short-, medium-, or long-term internal tamponading substance, on the rabbit choroid and retina. The aim was the check whether PFP is tolerated as a tamponade in the eye or damages the retina, and if any such damage is due to toxicity or to emulsification which may stimulate phagocytosis. METHODS: Twenty-four right eyes of rabbits operated by vitrectomy were filled with 0.8-1 ml of PFP as retinal tamponading substance. Twelve eyes were operated by vitrectomy and filled with 0.8-1 ml of balanced salt solution as the control group. Direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy was done on the third and seventh day after surgery, then once a week. Enucleation, with histological and immunohistochemical examination, was done on the second day, then in the first, second, fourth and eighth weeks after surgery. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Histological examination showed progressive damage of the chorioretinal tissues right from the second week: the chorioretinal structure was completely altered from the eighth week. Immunohistochemical examinations showed that glia cells were involved in the inflammation consequent to internal tamponade with PFP.

[Kawasaki syndrome].

Kawasaki's syndrome is an acute multisystem vasculitis typical for childhood characterized by fever, conjunctivitis, stomatitis, swelling of cervical lymph-nodes, exanthema and desquamation of extremities. The etiology is so far unknown, the latest hypothesis formulated are reported. Cardiac involvement and particularly coronary aneurysmal dilatation is the most severe and characteristic SK complication.
