Parental age and birth order in Alzheimer's disease: a case-control study in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean area (Quebec, Canada).

Parental age at the time of birth of 133 clinically diagnosed Alzheimer patients from the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean area (Quebec, Canada) were compared with those of 6 control groups formed out a population registry. The birth order of the Alzheimer patients was also analyzed. The results did not show any parental age or birth order effect, which is in agreement with previous reports. The importance of control selection in such studies is stressed.

Exposure to formaldehyde among animal health students.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the exposure to formaldehyde in 2 groups each with 18 students in animal health technology from two different training centers (TC) during a 3-hour weekly laboratory session in biology. Personal sampling during the session was done with passive bubblers for formaldehyde. The analysis of formaldehyde was done by visible absorption spectrometry according to NIOSH method 3500. The students in TC 1 were exposed to formaldehyde levels ranging from less than 0.11 to 0.76 mg/m3 with an average at 0.25 mg/m3 during the 3-hour biology laboratory. The students in TC 2 were exposed to higher concentrations of formaldehyde ranging from 0.26 to 1.2 mg/m3 with an average at 0.632 mg/m3. The results of the survey indicate that the students in both centers were exposed to a notable amount of formaldehyde vapor, at a level that is above the threshold limit value.

Recognition and progression of coal workers' pneumoconiosis in the collieries of northern France.

In France, both active and retired coal miners take part in medical surveillance programs. Those compensated for pneumoconiosis are registered and receive annual chest X-rays and regular lung function assessments. A longitudinal study was done among 2719 pneumoconiotics from the Nord-Pas de Calais region Compensation Register, who received first compensation between 1942 and 1987 to study progression of CSWP. Chest radiographs taken at time of compensation and in 1987 were examined by three independent readers. There was a change over time in the characteristics of pneumoconiosis at the time of first compensation toward a low profusion of irregular opacities. In the period from 1982 to 1987, 645 pneumoconiotics developed progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). The occurrence of PMF was related to the date of compensation and the profusion of small opacities at detection (after controlling for time to follow-up). Two profiles for changes in coal workers' simple pneumoconiosis (CWSP) were observed: the first in the group of subjects with mild pneumoconiosis at compensation, who did not reach category 2 at follow-up and had a low attack rate of PMF; and the second in the group of those compensated for category 1/2 pneumoconiosis or higher, who reached severe CWSP and had a twofold attack rate for PMF at follow-up. The changes observed in the characteristics of pneumoconiosis at first compensation between 1942 and 1987 suggest a lessening of disease severity.
