Terahertz demonstrations of effectively two-dimensional photonic bandgap structures.

We demonstrate effectively two-dimensional (2D) terahertz (THz) photonic bandgap (PBG) structures for transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode propagation within metal parallel plate waveguides (PPWG). The 2D-PBG structures consisting of square arrays of dielectric cylinders were characterized by THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). THz photonic bandgaps were observed, as determined by the 160 mum lattice constant, the 65 mum diameter, and the dielectric constant of the cylinders. The experimental measurements were fitted with excellent agreement to 2D theory, confirming that for TEM mode propagation, effectively 2D propagation experiments can be achieved within the bounded space of the PPWG.

Observation of a new type of THz resonance of surface plasmons propagating on metal-film hole arrays.

Highly conducting metal-film subwavelength hole arrays, lithographically fabricated on high-resistivity silicon wafers in optical contact with thick silicon plates, have been characterized by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy with subpicosecond resolution and over a frequency range from 0.5 to 3 THz with 5 GHz resolution. A well-defined ringing structure extending to more than 250 psec is observed on the trailing edge of the transmitted THz pulse. In the frequency domain this ringing structure corresponds to a new type of extremely sharp resonant line structure between the fundamental surface plasmon modes of the hole array. A simple theoretical model is presented and shows good agreement with the experimental data.

Waveguide terahertz time-domain spectroscopy of nanometer water layers.

Waveguide terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is demonstrated to have the sensitivity to characterize nanometer-thick water layers on the surfaces of a parallel-plate metal waveguide. The measured far-infrared absorption and index of refraction of the 20-nm water layers are in reasonable self-consistent agreement with those of bulk water.

Terahertz transmission properties of thin, subwavelength metallic hole arrays.

We present experimental results of the transmission magnitude and phase change of terahertz pulses through thin metallic films patterned with subwavelength hole arrays on silicon wafers. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy measurements reveal a sharp phase peak centered on the surface plasmon resonance. Correspondingly, and consistent with the Kramers-Kronig relations, the measured transmission magnitude has the shape of the derivative of this peak. In addition, we determine that the aperture shape has a notable effect on the transmission properties of two-dimensional hole arrays.

Optical tunneling of single-cycle terahertz bandwidth pulses.

We report time-domain measurements with subpicosecond resolution of optical tunneling of terahertz electromagnetic pulses undergoing frustrated total internal reflection. Measurements of the transmitted electromagnetic pulses over a 3 THz bandwidth permits direct determination of frequency-dependent phase and amplitude changes in both the thin and opaque barrier limits in a single measurement. A complex frequency response function describing propagation through the barrier is developed based upon linear dispersion theory and the Fresnel coefficients at complex angles in the optical barrier. Our measurements are in excellent agreement with this theoretical model across the experimentally determined bandwidth; the model makes no assumptions about the beam path through the barrier and has no adjustable parameters. The theory is shown to satisfy the Kramers-Kronig relations, indicating causal propagation across the barrier.
