Studies on the microvascularization of the digestive tract by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. 2. Bile duct in guinea pigs.

The microvascularization of the bile duct was studied in 20 adult guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) using microvascular corrosion casts in the scanning electron microscope. The main supplying and draining vessels are located in the adventitial layer; from there they form the subepithelial capillary network. The microangioarchitecture of the common bile duct is reminiscent of that of the cystic and hepatic ducts. The diameter of these ducts is 1,000 microns on average. The microvascular arrangement in the bile duct suggests a probable involvement of the capillaries in the absorption of bile hormones.

Studies on the microvascularization of the digestive tract by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. 1. Large intestine in rats and guinea pigs.

The colonic microvascularization of 10 adult Sprague-Dawley rats and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus was studied by scanning electron microscopy of microvascular corrosion casts. The tunica muscularis is supplied by branches of the submucosal arteriolar plexus, according to the arrangement of muscle layers, longitudinally and transversally arranged capillaries are distinguished. The mucosal capillaries show a honeycomb pattern and mimic the openings of the mucosal glands. Parallel to the luminal aspect of the large intestine, the mucosal capillary loops often arise from the submucosal arterioles at the most abluminal aspect of the mucosa; however, some arterioles end just subjacent to these capillaries. The submucosal veins are located just subjacent to the capillaries of the lamina propria. The rat and guinea pig colonic vascular architecture revealed no differences, neither did the capillary density in different parts of the large intestine.

Management of a glomus jugulare tumour with internal carotid artery involvement.

A previously healthy 40-year-old female presented for surgical resection of a large glomus jugulare tumour with extensive involvement of the carotid siphon and intracranial extension. Conduct of anaesthesia with specific reference to cerebral protection is discussed. A combination of induced hypothermia, barbiturate therapy, normotension, normocarbia and prior clamping of the distal internal carotid artery was chosen. The role of barbiturates as a therapeutic intervention is debated.

Adult

Leucodystrophy of late onset in two members of a family.

We report 2 cases of demyelinating disease of unusually late onset in a mother and her son. The late onset of symptoms, at the age of 63 years in the mother's case, is rare. The onset in the son was at the age of 35 years. The relatively few adult cases previously reported range in age from 25 to 65 years, but only 2 cases in persons over the age of 60 could be found in the literature. The clinical and neuropathological findings are described.

Adult

The lack of effect of ejaculate sequence on sex ratio in rabbits.

The influence of the order of the ejaculate on the sex ratio was determined by ejaculating 1 of 5 experimental males 20 times over a period of 2 to 8 h. The sex ratio was noted for the offspring of ejaculates 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 in a total of 32 litters. The sex ratio of these offspring did not deviate signigicantly from 50:50 (P greater than 0.1) for any ejaculate in the sequence.

Animals

Maternal febrile morbidity associated with fetal monitoring and cesarean section.

The maternal febrile morbidity for 793 patients undergoing cesarean section was analyzed. The influence of length of labor, duration of ruptured membranes, and fetal heart rate monitoring was studied in both clinic and private patients. Morbidity among private patients was found to be consistently higher in monitored patients with comparable lengths of labor and durations of membrane rupture. The number of vaginal examinations, duration of monitoring, or number of fetal scalp electrode applications did not effect morbidity outcome.

Intracerebral malignant fibrous histiocytoma: a light and electron microscopic study with immunohistochemistry.

A 65-year-old man presented with a tumor within the right cerebral hemisphere. Biopsy showed a pleomorphic neoplasm which was diagnosed as a malignant fibrous histiocytoma only after immunohistochemical and electron microscopic examination. Full clinical and radiological investigation, including total body CAT scanning, failed to reveal any other deposits, and thus it is believed to have arisen in the brain. It is emphasised that this diagnosis could not have been reached had only conventional histological techniques been available.
