[Histological study of the remains of periodontal membrane at the alveolar wall after tooth extraction].

Histological study of 40 alveolar wounds of altogether 5 dogs have given evidence to the fact that remains of the periodontal membrane could remain in the apical area of the alveoli in their whole width. In the middle part of the alveoli, remains of it are found in a thin layer. In the marginal area, bone can be found lying open with torn remnants, which are lying free in the coagulum. In these adhering rests of the periodontal membrane plenty of dynamic cells as well as dilated vessels can be observed. All these facts lead to the idea of considering the part that the remains of the periodontal membrane may possibly play in the beginning process of alveolar wound healing.

Alveolar Process

[Histiocytosis X: roentgenological findings in 23 cases].

The authors describe the clinical, roentgenological findings, especially the oral manifestation and differential diagnosis of histiocytosis X in 23 cases. It is shown that the clinical and roentgenological differential diagnosis is problematically.

Adolescent

[Allergy to ethylene oxide in dental patients].

IgE antibodies to human serum albumin-ethylene oxide conjugates were determined by radioallergosorbent test (RAST) in 50 patients who underwent multiple oral surgery during which Et-O sterilised material was used. Total serum IgE levels were also tested by enzyme immunoassay and possible sensitivity to common aeroallergens was investigates by the use of a newly introduced screening test (Phadiatop). IgE serum levels ranged between 12 and 98 IU/ml (normal values) and Phadiatop results were negative. We failed to demonstrate Et-O sensitisation between our patients, therefore we suggest that such a risk is minimal among dental patients.

Antigen-Antibody Complex

[Computer tomography of parotid].

Tumors of the parotis and surrounding tissues can be examined by CT, by CT-sialography ot by intravenous contrast medium injection. In five special cases in which we examined parotis and surrounding tissues we report on our experiences with the methods.

Adenoma, Pleomorphic

[Radiologic evaluation of cervical metastatic adenopathy].

A radiologic evaluation in nine patients with cervical adenopathy because of metastatic disease at a known or unknown primary site, inflammatory lymphadenitis or with masses simulating with cervical adenopathy was done. All patients were examined normally by an oral and maxillofacial or E.N.T. surgeon before the radiologic evaluation with CT, ultrasonography and/or sialography. CT was done in seven out of nine patients as the unique technique or in combination with ultrasonography and/or sialography, while ultrasonography was used in two of the cases as a unique imaging technique and in one case in combination with a CT examination, without any intravenous contrast administration. A primary site was diagnosed in five cases, while in a sixth case was not diagnosed. In an eighth case of submandibular nodal enlargement, the diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease was established after a biopsy. For the last two cases the diagnosis of tuberculous cervical lymphadenopathy was confirmed. From the above cases it is clearly shown that computerized tomography, especially with intravenous contrast administration, ultrasonography and sialography in some of the cases, are necessary as routine examinations, before a diagnosis of cervical metastatic disease is to be done.

Head and Neck Neoplasms

Surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

The patient must be made to understand that a normal joint cannot be constructed by any surgical procedure and his part in the rehabilitation programme must be specifically stressed and assurance must be obtained from him that he is willing to carry out instructions during the postoperative treatment. The surgeon must be self disciplined enough to demand the best of himself in any situation and never to be satisfied with less. The surgeon must be generally optimistic, but his knowledge of the local anatomy and the surgical pathology must constantly remind him of his limitations. He must know that we cannot construct a normal joint and we must not promise one.

Age Factors

[Clinical and experimental animal studies made to evaluate silastic and feeeze dried dura used in the treatment of orbital floor fractures (author's transl)].

A comparison has been made of the results obtained using Silastic and freeze-dried Dura in experiments on dogs treated for orbital floor fractures. Dura was found to be a better implant than Silastic because the former material will be completely resorbed and replaced by cicatricial connective tissue. Silastic tends to remain in its original site or position and may lead to secondary injuries because of its mobility. Accordingly, the latter material is indicated for use in the case of extensive fractures only.

Animals

[Indirect lymphography of sub-mental and sub-maxillary lymph nodes (author's transl)].

This report presents our observations in 81 cases; and we have used indirect lymphography only, we injected the contrast medium, lipiodole ultra fluide, intramuscularly to both sides of the tongue. The injection sites are first anaesthetized. The amount of contrast medium should not exceed 5 cc. It is injected in about 10 mn. The first radiological examination is performed 4, 8 and 12 hours after the injection. X-rays are taken using the occipitomental and also lower intraoral occlusal views. The following radiological studies are made after 24 and 48 hours. If necessary further x-rays can be taken as well.

Chin

[Oro-sinusal communications. Methods of closure].

Three surgical methods are proposed by the authors for the treatment of an oralantral bistula (1. Wassmund-Rehrmann-Schüchardt--2. Kazanjian-Schüchardt--3. J. M .Vaillant). This is an experience drawn by 450 cases treated in the Ceinic of Oral Surgery of the University of Salonica (Greece), during the last three years. Fistulas, immediately appeared after extraction of an upper caspid of premolare, surgical removal of teeth, or apex, intrasinusaly located, long persistance of a fistula because of a kyste or tumor in the upper jaw have been the subjects of the present paper.

Humans

[Streptococci isolated from the blood after tooth extraction. Their role in subacute bacterial endocarditis].

A classification, according to the Lancefield's method, of the streptocoques isolated in the blood, after teeth extractions, as well as a determination of their sensibility to the antibiotics, are attempted in this study. It concerns to 23 adults, well supported, to whom multiple extractions, under general anesthesia have been done. We studied both biochemical and serological reactions, and a test for the antibiotic resistance is realised. We insiste in the contrindiction of streptomycine and sulfanilamides in the treatment or the prevention of bacteremia of dental origine.
