Use of traditional healers and modern medicine in Ghana.

PURPOSE: To gain understanding of the use of traditional and modern medicine among the people in Ghana, West Africa. METHODS: Data were collected from nine participants using a semi-structured questionnaire developed by the researchers based on review of the literature. FINDINGS: Data analysis was performed manually using reduction methodology to develop broad themes. Findings indicated that choices in healthcare modalities by literate Ghanaians included either traditional or modern medicine, or blending of both. Strong influences on these choices were the level of education and related themes, influence of family and friends, and spiritual/religious beliefs. IMPLICATIONS: Findings indicate that traditional and modern medicines will always be part of Ghanaian healthcare delivery and efforts should be made to integrate traditional practitioners into the national healthcare delivery system.

Traveling for care: factors influencing health care access for rural dwellers.

This study explored 19 rural dwellers' perceptions of health care issues through semi-structured interviews. Sample selection, data collection, and analysis adhered to the grounded theory method in that an interactive design was maintained. The strategy of traveling for care describes how rural dwellers deal with the problem of varying access to health care. This study uncovers the influencing factors that impact on rural dwellers' decisions when traveling for care. Most rural dwellers choose to wait before seeking health care; those factors that contributed to the decision to wait includes limited financial resources to pay for health care, prior experiences within the system, and the prevalent belief that they can provide self-care effectively. When self-care was not successful they evaluated their resources to assist in their decision making. The last phase of this strategy was choosing the distance they would go to receive health care. Choosing the distance varied greatly among the participants. A few choose to go without health care whereas others would go to any lengths to resolve their health problem.

Education of health care providers for the rural setting: a family nurse practitioner demonstration program.

Spurred by mass concern over shortages of health care providers, the country's educational system has, over the past ten years, produced an ample supply (in some areas a near glut) of health care professionals. Studies demonstrate, however, that these professionals tend to cluster in the affluent metropolitan and suburban areas. Residents of rural areas are still significantly underserved. In the healthy rural southern half of Georgia, this problem has reached a critical peak. Georgia Southern College (GSC) is a rural based college located in the heart of rural south Georgia. In order to address some of the health care problems of its constituency, GSC, with federal support, established a Nursing Department and a Family Nurse Practitioner program with a commitment to recruit nursing students from the rural area, educate them in rural settings, and provide appropriate preparation for the unique experience of working in the rural environment. The program has been very successful in producing highly skilled graduates who do stay and work in the rural areas, providing health care at reasonable costs. This paper describes the setting (rural south Georgia), the need, the program implementation, and the impact (number of graduates actually working in rural settings, and innovative projects initiated by graduates).
