INTRODUCTION: The aim of this investigation was to point to the influence of minerals and total osmolality on regulation and secretion of prolactin in decidual tissue of the placenta and the role of prolactin in regulation of osmotic processes across the fetoplacental membrane. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Explants for the tissue culture have been obtained from pregnant women with normal pregnancy and delivery, between the 277 and 282 days of gestation. The investigation consisted of 4 repeated experiments. The parietal decidua and the corresponding chorion were separated from the amnion, rinsed in salt solution and cut into explants 0.2 g of weight. After a 2-hour period of preincubation in the control medium, 12 explants were incubated in the media of altered mineral and osmotic properties, whereas the 13-th in the control medium. Concentrations of prolactin following the 3-hour incubation in the medium was estimated by immunoenzymologic procedures. RESULTS: During the 3-hour incubation, the control explants secreted on average 75.4 +/- 5.23 micrograms/l of prolactin in the experiment repeated 4 times. The changes of Na+, Cl-, K+, Mg++, P- and HCO3- concentrations and of the total osmolality have not significantly influenced the synthesis of prolactin. In the medium with no Ca++, the value of secreted prolactin was 26.7 +/- 3.34 micrograms/l (p < 0.001); increase of the Ca++ concentration has not influenced the synthesis of prolactin. In the medium with increased concentration of H+ (pH = 7.00), the prolactin concentration was 50.9 +/- 2.9 micrograms/l (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The minerals--Na+, Cl-, K+, Mg++, P-, HCO3- and the total osmolality do not significantly influence the synthesis of prolactin in decidual-chorionic tissue. Certain quantities of Ca++ and optimal concentration of H+ are necessary for the synthesis of prolactin (PRL).
This study investigated the efficacy of Zoladex depot 3.6 mg (goserelin acetate) during a 4-month treatment of infertile patients with uterine myomas of different size and location. The investigation comprised 30 patients aged 22-42 years, distributed into 2 groups regarding uterine and myoma volume. The first group included patients with uterine myomas less than 70 ml and uterus less than 300 ml. The second group included patients in whom these volumes exceeded the above mentioned values. Zoladex depot was administered every 28 days for 4 months with ultrasonographic follow-up of volume decrease, whereas patients with submucous myomas underwent control hysteroscopy. The obtained results point to efficacy of Zoladex in decreasing the volumes of both myomas and uterus by more than 50%, which correlates with literature data. Of particular interest is complete disappearance of myomas in about 60% of patients of the first group. Serum concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol (E2) were followed-up prior to and during Zoladex therapy where multivariate variance analysis showed statistically significant differences. The side effects were recorded and are similar to those of other GnRH analogues.
The study from the working environment prevailing in two departments of tobacco factory (DIN) Nis together with the study of the employees (95) working in these departments were carried out. The workers were divided into two sub-groups: smokers (62) and non-smokers (33) and the results of the lung function tests were compared to normal values. The results found point out to the presence of the tobacco dust in these departments and the values exceeding MAC might have caused the obstructive changes of airways in the workers exposed.
An examination of the working area in one branch of Electronic Industry in Nis (TV) was performed together with the state of the pulmonary ventilation in workers who worked in this department (120). The workers were divided into two groups: smokers (32) and non-smokers (88) and the values obtained from lung function tests were compared with the normal standards. The results of the examination showed that on these working places some chemical noxiousnesses were present (lead, tin, calaphonium and ethyl alcohol) which might have caused the increase of air flow resistance in the respiratory tracts of the exposed workers.
