Interactions between carbamazepine and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000: characterisations of the physical, solid dispersed and eutectic mixtures.

The influence of a hydrophilic carrier (PEG 6000) on the polymorphism of carbamazepine, an antiepileptic drug, was investigated in binary physical mixtures and solid dispersions by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetry, hot-stage microscopy (HSM), and X-ray diffractometry, respectively. This study provides also an attempt to develop a method to calculate more precisely the eutectic composition. In rather ideal physical mixtures, carbamazepine was found as monoclinic Form III. In solid dispersions, the drug was found to crystallize as trigonal Form II; a eutectic invariant in the PEG 6000-rich composition domain (6% of carbamazepine mass) was evidenced by DSC experiments and confirmed by HSM observations. In the binary phase diagram the ideal carbamazepine liquidus curve was located at temperatures higher than the respective experimental ones. This suggests that drug can be maintained in the liquid state in the temperature-mass fraction (T--x) region between the two carbamazepine liquidus curves. This indicates in turn that attractive interactions occur between carbamazepine and PEG 6000-chains. These interactions have been also claimed to prevent carbamazepine from degradation into iminostilbene (a compound resulting from the chemical degradation of carbamazepine which is postulated to be responsible for the idiosyncratic toxicity of the drug) and thought to lead to the crystallization of metastable Carbamazepine II from melt. The negative excess entropy for eutectic mixtures indicated that the drug crystals are finely dispersed in the bulk of polymer chains.

Hall effect in the normal phase of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2PF6

We report accurate Hall effect measurements performed in the normal phase of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6 at ambient pressure. The Hall coefficient is found to be strongly temperature dependent all the way from 300 K down to the spin density wave onset arising around 12 K. These new results emphasize the existence of a high temperature regime above 130 K where the Fermi liquid model is not satisfactory.

Synovial cyst of the proximal tibiofibular joint.

We describe a case of an unusual synovial cyst originating from the proximal tibiofibular joint. This cyst presented as a painless, soft tissue swelling just distal to the fibular head. We review the literature on this topic regarding clinical presentation, imaging, and management.

Increased redness in turkey breast muscle induced by fusarial culture materials.

Short-term feeding trials with experimentally moldy rice (10% of diet) or corn (12.5%) were carried out on turkey poults to screen for toxigenic Fusarium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus, which were recovered from corn or commercial turkey feed. A major finding was that culture materials of some fusaria increased the redness of turkey breast muscle without causing obvious hemorrhages either in the musculature or in the internal organs. Corn culture but not rice culture of Fusarium moniliforme (M-1325) depressed body weight gains, feed utilization, and heart weights (P = .01). The increased redness (reddish discoloration) could lead to the depreciation of fresh turkey muscle product.

Reappraisal of prick test to tree and weed antigens.

Although 3+ or 4+ prick test reactions to olive tree or Russian thistle are valid, the RAST values to these antigens are significantly lower than those in patients with similar reactions to grass antigens, suggesting that nonimmunologic factors are partially responsible for the skin test reactions to the tree and weed antigens.

Lymphocyte response to grass pollen antigens: a correlation with radioallergosorbent test and effect of immunotherapy.

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthetic response of cultured lymphocytes to grass pollen antigens was significantly higher in 66 untreated atopic patients than in 15 non-atopic subjects (p less than 0.05). There was no correlation between the DNA synthetic response and the specific IgE antibody level as measured by radioallergosorbent test in the 81 subjects (r= 0.13; p greater than 0.2). The effect of immunotherapy on proliferative lymphocyte response and specific IgE antibody response to grass pollen antigens was evaluated prospectively in 22 atopic patients. The DNA synthetic response to grass pollen antigens was significantly reduced after immunotherapy (p less than 0.01) but the specific IgE antibody level did not change significantly.

Agreement between radioallergosorbent test and skin test.

A total of 4,260 RAST results were compared with the same number of prick and intracutaneous skin test results. Intracutaneous test was done only when the prick test was negative. The mean agreement between positive RAST and positive prick test was 81.3% for five grasses, 45.1% for seven weeds, 42.2% for two trees, 42.6% for two molds, and 45.8% for two environmental antigens. The mean agreement between positive RAST and positive intracutaneous test ranged from 0 to 4.9% for the same antigens.
