[Differences in assay sensitivity of selected tumor markers in head and neck neoplasms].

Serum levels of seven tumor markers (AFP, Ca 19-9, CEA, TPA, NSE, ferritin and SCC-Ag) were measured in 95 patients with carcinoma of the head and neck to determine their sensitivity. The positive rates in 95 patients with the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were: 2.1% for AFP, 13.8% for Ca 19-9, 2.1% for CEA, 32.9% for TPA, 29.8% for ferritin, 53.2% for NSE and 46.8% for SCC-Ag in the first exam. Lowest sensitivity in the first exam of tests were in patients with SCC of the larynx: TPA-29.5%, ferritin-26%, NSE-51%, SCC-Ag 48%. Highest sensitivity of tests were in patients with SCC in other localisation than larynx: AFP-0%, Ca 19-9-23.5%, CEA-5.9%, TPA-38%, ferritin-35%, NSE-56%, SCC-62%. The sensitivity of the combination assay with these four tumor markers (TPA, ferritin, NSE, SCC-Ag) was higher than those obtained with individual markers. The sensitivity of the combination assay was for the group 95 patients 87.4% (first exam), for patients with SCC of the larynx 85.2% (first exam), for 34 patients with SCC in other localisations than larynx 91.2% (first exam). Combination assay with TPA, ferritin, NSE and SCC-Ag could be useful for screening and seems to be most useful for detection of recurrence in the follow-up.

[Syntaris in the treatment of rhinitis].

Syntaris has proven itself safe and efficacious in the therapy of rhinitis with various etiologics. The only side effect of note has been nasal stinging, most likely due to the propylene glycol content of the vehicle.

[Effect of histamine on behavior of the rosette test in patients with pollinosis].

The study comprised of 50 patients with the diagnosis of pollinosis based on characteristic history data, positive results of skin test and positive IgE FAST test with grass pollen allergens. 20 ml of blood was taken from all patients and total E rosette test was carried. Antihistamine was added to rosette test in the concentration of 10(-3) mg/ml in the following doses: 0.1 ml, 0.2 ml, 0.3 ml. Histamine caused stat. sig. (P < 0.001) decrease in the percentage of lymphocytes forming E rosettes. We think that lymphocyte may be injured by histamine under exposition to grass pollens.

[N2O cryotherapy in treating allergic rhinitis].

Chronic rhinitis is known since many years to be a difficult therapeutic problem. Also new methods of treatment did not bring satisfactory good results. In our clinic a cryosurgery was applied in patients with chronic rhinitis. Performed observations indicated that cryosurgery was more successful than other conventional methods, especially in early stage of disease.

[Three month treatment with budesonide in patients with corticoid dependent bronchial asthma--personal experience].

The experiment aimed at evaluating a three-month therapy of asthmatic patients with budesonide inhalations. The study involved 32 patients with long-lasting bronchial asthma depended on steroids. Therapy with budesonide (Pulmicort Astra) in a mean daily dose 1.6 mg enabled withdrawal of depot steroids and inhalation treatment only. In patients receiving prednisone in a mean daily dose 5.0 +/- 4.8 mg, budesonide therapy enabled a reduction of the oral dose by 50 percent. A significant improvement in the psychophysical status of patients has been noted despite a lack of significant differences in the results of lung functioning tests. Adverse reactions such as relaxation, insufficiency of the vocal cords at phonation and hoarseness were seen in 20 percent of patients, and in one of them required cessation of the drug. An increase in the number of Candida albicans colonies in throat swabs (over 20 colonies per plate) was seen in 7 treated patients but clinical symptoms which required an additional treatment were noted only in 1 patient.
