Latex-specific proteins causing immediate-type cutaneous, nasal, bronchial, and systemic reactions.

We examined 70 patients reporting hypersensitivity reactions caused by latex articles. All patients suffered from urticaria, 36 from rhinitis, 31 from conjunctivitis, 22 from dyspnea, and 17 from systemic reactions, and four patients developed severe systemic complications during surgery. By means of inhalative challenge tests with powdered latex gloves, it could be demonstrated that the glove powder (cornstarch) obviously functions as a carrier for latex allergens, which then become airborne. Five of 18 patients undergoing such challenge tests demonstrated a significant increase of specific airway resistance; 17, acute rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis; and two, a systemic reaction. Sixty-two percent of the patients demonstrated specific IgE antibodies to natural latex, 58% to an irradiatively cross-linked, so-called, "hypoallergenic" latex preparation, and 46% to commercial-latex RAST disks (Pharmacia). No specific antibodies to cornstarch or a mixture of rubber chemicals were found. A good correlation (82%) exists between latex IgE RAST and latex skin prick test, as revealed in a subgroup of 45 subjects. By means of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the latex allergen appears to be a mixture of proteins in a molecular weight range from 10 to 67 kd.

[Fibrin depostition in granuloma anulare (author's transl)].

In 6 cases of granuloma anulare direct immunofluorescence studies were carried out with anti-fibrinogen and anti-immunoglobulin sera. Fibrin deposition was found in all lesions. The result is discussed with reference to local fibrinolysis.

Adolescent

[Allergen-specific immunoglobulin E in the serum (RAST), skin tests and mucosa provocation tests using house dust and house mite extract in rhinopathy and bronchial asthma].

Allergy against house dust and house dust mite was examined by RAST, skin and provocation test, with not identical allergen extracts. 50 patients with allergic rhinitis showed insufficient RAST results with house dust, better results for house dust mite. 65 patients with allergic asthma bronchiale presented satisfying results with house dust, good results with house dust mite. Recommendations are given for the application of RAST in the diagnosis of allergy.

Allergens

[Granulomas of axillae (zirconium?) (author's transl)].

Deodorant preparations containing Zirconium may induce axillary granulomas of allergic origin. The case of a 49 years old female patient is presented, who developed axillary granulomas after having used a deodorant preparation containing Zirconium.

Axilla

[DNA cytophotometry on cells of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (author's transl)].

Determination of DNA content was performed by Feulgen staining of tumour cell smears and DNA measurement with an integrating microdensitometer, In 3 cases of Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans there was a DNA distribution in the range of 2 c: only a few cells showed a DNA content in the range between 2 c and 4 c; no atypical DNA distribution curves were found. The rate of proliferation in these cases of Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is small, there are no cytophotometric indices for malignancy.
