Relationships between MMPI codetypes and MAC scale elevations in adolescent psychiatric samples.

This study investigated the relationship between subjects' MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC) elevations and their placement in various codetype classifications. The sample consisted of 1,347 adolescents receiving psychiatric services in Missouri, Virginia, or Texas. The frequency of MAC scores greater than or equal to 24 and greater than or equal to 28 was evaluated, separately by gender, for single-scale and two-point codetypes, containing a minimum of at least 10 subjects. Marked differences occurred in the frequency of MAC scale elevations depending on the adolescent's codetype classification. MAC scores for both genders, for example, were most frequently elevated for the 4-9/9-4 codetype and more rarely elevated for the 2-3/3-2 codetype. Results are discussed in terms of potential measurement overlap which may occur between the MAC scale and several MMPI standard clinical scales, including 4, 6, and 9. It was also noted that the sensitivity and specificity of the MAC scale may vary in relation to subjects' clinical scale profile characteristics.

MMPI factor analytic findings for adolescents: item- and scale-level factor structures.

Although numerous studies have examined the factor structures of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in investigations of adults, very little attention has been directed to this issue in adolescent samples. In this study, we investigated the item-level and scale-level factor structures using a sample of 1,762 adolescents receiving psychiatric services at the time of their MMPI assessment. Results identified 17 factors related to item responses and 5 factors based on scale-level data. Findings are discussed in relation to results obtained in adult populations and the potential utility of factor analytically derived content scales for adolescent MMPI interpretation.

Recent adolescent MMPI norms: T-score elevation comparisons to Marks and Briggs.

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) norms developed by Marks and Briggs (1967/1972) have served as the standard adolescent norms used for over 10 years. Additional adolescent norms have recently been produced by Gottesman, Hanson, Kroeker, and Briggs (1987) and by Colligan and Offord (1989), thereby providing MMPI users with a potential choice of adolescent norms. Our study examines the effects of these adolescent norm sets on single-scale and profile elevations. In addition, we examine the ability of these norm sets to generate T-score values that would serve to discriminate accurately among adolescents in outpatient (n = 100), inpatient (n = 100), and normal (n = 100) settings. Results indicated that the choice of adolescent norms resulted in important differences in profile elevation. Findings from the discriminant function analyses, however, indicated that these normative sets were roughly equivalent in discriminating among adolescents in the three settings.
