The effect of data aggregation on temporal stability of cardiovascular reactivity.

Temporal stability of behaviorally evoked cardiovascular responses is important for theoretical (concept of activation) and practical (risk for cardiovascular diseases) reasons. As in test psychology, reliability of physiological responsivity depends on the degree of data aggregation across several measurements. This paper describes a statistical approach based on intra-class correlations. This approach is suited to define certain stability measures based on variance components representing different levels of data aggregation. An empirical investigation is presented comprised of 58 subjects, three physiological parameters (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure), two mental tasks, two sequences of the tasks within one session, and 2 days with an interval of 4 weeks between them. In addition to the finding that data aggregation can generally increase stability, the different sources of aggregation (across phases within a task, across tasks, and across task sequences) and their combinations are systematically compared with regard to their contribution to this enhancement. Finally, it will be shown how the approach can be utilized to explain aggregation effects for other psychophysiological research questions such as covariation, consistency, and ambulatory assessment of cardiovascular functioning.

[Dosimeter for detection of hydrogen fluoride].

The passive dosimeter for hydrogen fluoride monitoring consists of a plastic box with 40 holes of 1 mm in diameter in the front side containing a Na2CO3-impregnated filter paper as the collection medium. The sampling rate of this dosimeter is independent of the exposure dose and temperature but depends on the relative humidity. At 20% relative humidity the sampling rate is 1.69 l.h-1, however at 70% the sampling rate is 0.68 l.h-1. The dependence of the sampling rate on the relative humidity phi is expressed by the equation AR = - 0.0198.phi + 2.04.

[Recent developments in pollutant dosimetry with special reference to water soluble gases].

The paper describes special problems of sampling toxic gases, very soluble in water, on workplaces with passive samplers. It is possible to construct such passive dosimeters which are suitable for the measurement of substances mentioned above if some peculiarities are taken in consideration. The stain-length passive dosimeters are specially analysed. Problems of the accuracy of this dosimeters, caused by inconstancy of the response time, are explained.

Rapid yeast DNA staining method for flow cytometry.

The variation of the fluorescence intensity of olivomycin-stained yeast cells as a function of the concentration of olivomycin, NaCl, and MgCl2 in the staining solution was studied. The best results were obtained when the staining solution contained 100 micrograms, olivomycin/ml, 40 mM MgCl2, and 1 M NaCl. A staining time of 12 min was sufficient for proper staining.
