[The common risk factors in gallstones and cardiovascular diseases].

UNLABELLED: In this study, I analyzed the principal risk factors which exist in both diseases. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to establish the relationship between gallstone and heart diseases in a population who was admitted in the University Hospital. METHODS: I investigated 1122 patients with heart diseases from 2488 patients with gallstone, between 1st of January 1993-30th of June 1997. At the study group I found one or many risk factors association in the both diseases. RESULTS: This study shows a significant interaction between these factors and gallstone and heart disease. CONCLUSIONS: The common risk factors have a major importance in the development of the gallstone, or of the heart disease, or both.

[Rhythm disorders in gallstones].

UNLABELLED: In this study, I analyzed the principal rhythm disorders which I found in gallstone. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to find if the rhythm disorders are in relationship with gallstone or not. METHODS: From 1122 patients with gallstone and heart diseases--261 had rhythm disorders. All of these were examined: physical examinations, abdominal echography and ECG. RESULTS: 23.26% from the patients had rhythm disorders, especially sinusal tachycardia and atrial fibrillation. CONCLUSIONS: I approximate that a quarter from the patients with gallstone can develop rhythm disorders.

[The importance of ano-rectal manometry in irritable bowel syndrome].

UNLABELLED: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) represents a frequent cause for gastroenterological referral. 50% of all gastroenterological consultations are for functional gastrointestinal disorders (IBS included). Multiple motility abnormalities were described in IBS. The AIM of the study was to evaluate the role of ano-rectal manometry in the diagnosis of IBS. STUDY DESIGN: 24 patients with IBS (mean age 50.8 +/- 15.4) and a control group of 10 subjects with no abdominal symptoms (mean age 48.1 +/- 12.3) had each an ano-rectal manometry examination. RESULTS: After exclusion of constipation predominant IBS subjects, the IBS patients presented lower perception threshold (22.1 +/- 10.9 ml) than the control group (60.2 +/- 11.3 ml) (p < 0.05) and than the constipation predominant group (81.3 +/- 44.0) (p < 0.05). In 44% of constipation predominant IBS concomitant pathology, revealed by manometry, was present: megarectum or hemorrhoids (spasm). CONCLUSION: Anorectal manometry could be a useful tool for the evaluation of IBS patients.

[Heart blocks in gallstone].

UNLABELLED: In this study, I analysed the AV blocks and BB blocks which I found in gallstone. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to find if the heart blocks are in relationship with gallstone or not. METHODS: From 1122 patients with gallstone--13 had the AV blocks and 95 had BB blocks. All of these were examined: physical examinations, abdominal echography and Ecg. RESULTS: This study, 1.15% from the patients had AV blocks and 6.68% had BB blocks, especially RBB blocks, LBB blocks and AV1 block. CONCLUSIONS: I approximate that these diseases of the heart can coexist with gallstone.

[The gallstone and arterial hypertension].

UNLABELLED: In this study, I analyzed arterial hyperpressure which I found in gallstone. OBJECTIVES: The incidence between arterial hyperpressure and gallstone. METHODS: From 1122 patients with gallstone--500 had arterial hyperpressure; these patients were examined: physical examination, abdominal ultrasonography and Ecg. RESULTS: In this study--44.56% had arterial hyperpressure. CONCLUSIONS: I appreciate that arterial hyperpressure coexist with gallstone.

[The gallstone and ischemic heart disease].

UNLABELLED: I analyzed IHD and gallstone, in a study on 1122 patients. OBJECTIVES: The relation between IHD and gallstone incidence. METHODS: In this study--516 patients had IHD, with physical examination and Ecg, from 1122 patients with gallstone which were examined abdominal ultrasonography. RESULTS: I found that 45.98% from patients with gallstone had IHD. CONCLUSIONS: IHD can coexist with gallstone and the association between these two is 2.8 times more frequent in women.

[Microvesicular steatosis].

BACKGROUND: "Bright" liver at ultrasonography predicts fatty liver. AIM: To assess prevalence and predictors of a bright liver. METHODS: Prevalence arm--Prospective collection of records of unselected patients undergoing liver ultrasound. Protocol arm--A sample of patients with bright liver underwent routine laboratory investigations, liver tests, HBsAg and anti-HCV. RESULTS: No difference was found in mean values of fasting plasma glucose, LDL cholesterol, total bilirubin, GOT, GPT, AP, GGT, and serum bile acids or in the prevalence of serum HBsAg and anti-HCV in bright liver vs control groups. Univariate analysis showed body mass index, age, total cholesterol triglycerides, albumin, HDL cholesterol to be significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Roughly 20% of patients undergoing US for routine clinical practice will have a bright liver and levels are the independent predictors of a bright liver.

[New approach in the pharmacologic treatment of cancer].

Carcinogenesis comprises a progressive disorganization of architectural structure as well as a derangement of regulation of normal cell replication and differentiation. This transpires over a variable length of time at each biologic stage. Starting at the molecular level, inherited or acquired errors are associated with alterations in phenotype at successively higher levels of subcellular, cellular and architectural structure and function. Thus the well-known "Vogelgram" invokes as a unifying theme the presence of multiple, sequential, functional and structural genetic perturbations that in the aggregate, cause a temporal progression in tumor formation. While these have commonly been thought of as "steps" or "stages" of initiation, promotion and progression, pathologically regarded as the dysplasia or adenocarcinoma sequence, a given series of tumors examined for these changes shows considerable variation in the nature of the manifested genetic changes. Thus progression toward invasive neoplasia is not inexorable, and is opposed by restorative factors that normally operate in healthy and even damaged tissues. Limited damage is recognized and repaired, while cells damaged beyond repair are culled and replaced. As might be expected, such restorative functions perform most effectively early in the mutagenic/carcinogenic process where relatively normal structure and function persist. The evolutionary conflict between these multiple opposing forces likely results in the multi-step and multipath natures described in current models of carcinogenesis.
