Ear disease in rural Australia.

Aboriginals in rural Australia have a higher over-all prevalence of otitis media and tympanic scarring than non-Aboriginals. Over-all, 11% of 60273 Aboriginals had otitis media and 29.1% had scarring in one or both ears, although the rates varied widely in different regions. Of 37713 non-Aboriginals, 1.1% had otitis media and 13.5% had scarring in one or both ears. Children less than 10 years of age had the highest prevalence of otitis media in both racial groups. A lower proportion of the otitis media was "glue ear" in Aboriginals than in non-Aboriginals. The pattern of prevalence of otitis media and scarring suggests that otitis media occurs more frequently and lasts longer in Aboriginals. Scarring rates suggest that otitis media is less frequent now than in the past in non-Aboriginals, but is more frequent in Aboriginals.

Comparison of behavioral effects of systemic L-DOPA and intracranial dopamine in mesolimbic forebrain of nonhuman primates.

The systemic administration of L-DOPA and carbidopa to six rhesus and four squirrel monkeys produced an initial period of depressed activity followed by increased locomotion, hypervigilance, involuntary oral-facial movements and a gnawing syndrome. The squirrel monkey exhibited a depressed phase, locomotor stimulation, searching behavior, stereotypic grooming and gnawing syndrome. Most of these activities were prevented by pretreatment with 0.1 mg/kg haloperidol. Bilateral injection of 100 microgram dopamine into the mesolimbic forebrain of four squirrel monkeys also produced an initial depression followed by hyperactivity similar to that produced by L-DOPA, but without gnawing. A stereotyped submissive or juvenile posturing occurred in three animals. These DA-induced activities were blocked by 0.1 mg/kg haloperidol. Similar injection of 100 microgram L-norepinephrine produced a profound depression followed by moderate activity coupled with loss of extensor muscle strength in the legs. Bilateral injection of 300 microgram dopamine into the nucleus accumbens of a rhesus monkey produced stereotypic pacing. These data confirm in primates the importance of dopaminergic mechanisms of the mesolimbic forebrain in locomotor activity and behavior.

African-American clients: clinical practice issues.

African-American clients have in general been treated by mental health professionals who assess their behavior in terms of white culture and society. By failing to examine these clients in relation to their own culture, professionals may often arrive at distorted diagnoses that result in ineffective treatment.

Perfusions of the posterior hypothalamus of cats with various ions and saccharides: effects on body temperature.

Alterations of the ionic constituents of solutions perfused through the tissue of the posterior hypothalamic region in conscious cats elicited changes in body temperatures. Increasing the (Ca2+) to (Na+) ratio of the perfusion solution elicited falls in body temperature which were accompanied by changes in posture and vasomotor tone which assisted the heat loss. The magnitude of the fall was dependent on the ratio of (Ca2+) to (Na+) and was not related to the osmolarity of perfusion solution. The addition of dextrose to the perfusion solution attenuated or abolished the response produced by an increase in the (Ca2+) to (Na+) ratio. This dextrose effect could be attributed to its role as an energy substrate. These data are consistent with and extend previous suggestions that the set point for body temperature may be dependent on the inherent ratio of the ionic constituents of the posterior hypothalamic area. Further, they suggest that these ionically induced alterations can be overriden by increasing the available energy substrate.

A microampere radiotelemetry transmitter for measurement of temperature from unrestrained subjects.

A miniature radiotelemetry transmitter is described suitable for chronic or acute monitoring of temperatures from animal or human subjects. The transmitters can be easily constructed with little or no electronics background from discrete components readily available from any electronics supplier. Transmitters weighed from 2.5-20 g, had volumes of 0.8-3.5 ml, had normal currents of 50-120 muA with potential transmitter lives of 35 h to greater than 1 yr, and transmission ranges of 10-30 m. Transmitters could be implanted, swallowed, or connected to chronically or acutely attached temperature probes. The design of the telemetry system allows for reception on any commercial FM receiver. Depending on mode of decoding the temperature data transmitter signal can be accurate to measure changes of from 0.15 to 0.015 degrees C. Thus with a minimum of expense and little electronics background a temperature-dependent transmitter system can be constructed for monitoring temperatures from unrestrained subjects.

Tendency of fluorouracil to conceal deep foci of invasive basal cell carcinoma.

Topical fluorouracil treatment of invasive basal cell carcinomas (BCC) is not recommended because it often produces the appearance of control with superficial inhibition of the tumor as the deeper extensions continue to grow, which results in a needless delay in obtaining effective treatment. These conclusions are based on data obtained during the microscopically controlled excision of 103 invasive BCCs of the face that had recurred after topical fluorouracil treatment.

Bovine immunoglobulins following induced parturition.

Immunoglobulins in colostrum that are absorbed into the calf's blood were studied in cows in which parturition was induced by corticosteroids 3 to 22 days before expected full-term calving. The colostral and calf serum concentrations of IgG were not different from those in cows and their calves at full-term calving. Colostral IgG content decreased precipitously between 2 and 12 hours postpartum in both groups of cows.

Conditions that mimic skin cancer.

There are several conditions that may clinically and microscopically mimic skin cancer. Some of the more serious and unusual differential problems are infections, neoplasms, non-infectious granulomas, and ulcers. Particular attention is given to giant keratoacanthoma dn the Buschke-Lowenstein wart.

The effect of noradrenaline, injected into the hypothalamus, on thermoregulation in the cat.

1. Noradrenaline (NA) was microinjected into the anterior hypothalamic/preoptic area(AH/POA) of unanaesthetized cats held at ambient temperatures of 10, 22 or 35 degrees C. Loci in which injection of NA caused body temperature changes were also found to be sensitive to the febrile action of PGE1. 2. At all ambient temperatures, NA caused a dose-dependent fall in body temperature. However the mechanisms by which these temperature changes were brought about varied at different ambient temperatures. In cats maintained at the higher ambient temperature, NA activated heat loss mechanisms whereas in the cats maintained in the 10degrees C environment, the major effect of NA injection was an inhibition of heat conservation and heat production mechanisms. 3. We conclude that NA acts in cats not only as an inhibitor of heat conservation and production, but also acts in an excitatory manner on an active heat loss pathway within the AH/POA.

A fine structure study of human thymus.

A study of the fine structure of human thymus, including normal hyperplastic and with thymoma, is reported in this paper. There is increasing experimental evidence that thymic epithelial cells are a source of hormone. It is, therefore, of interest that we found epithelial cells containing intravesicular cytoplasmic material that reacted with silver methenamine as do mucoproteins. Similar material, possibly extracellular, was seen in close contact with lymphocytes and macrophages in the thymus. The results suggest a possible mechanism for epithelial cell/lymphocyte interaction. Some epithelial cells also showed phagocytic features and all appear to play a structural role. The presence of nuclear pockets was noted within lymphocyte nuclei.
