The critical mass theory of suicide.

It was reported in 1987 that nations with higher suicide rates in 1970 experienced greater increases by 1980. The present study did not replicate this phenomenon for the period of 1975 to 1985 using a sample of 32 nations with available data.

A study of police suicide in New York City, 1934-1939.

A study of 92 suicides among police officers in New York City from 1934 to 1939 gave little evidence that work-related stress played a role. Those suicides who were alcohol abusers were younger, less often promoted, more often had current job stress, and more often had interpersonal motives for their suicide.

The effectiveness of suicide prevention centers.

The presence of suicide prevention centers in a state in 1970 was negatively associated with changes in the suicide rate from 1970 to 1980 in the USA, indicating a preventive effect from suicide prevention centers. This effect, though weak, was consistently found for most demographic subgroups of the population and when a strong social correlate of suicide rates (divorce rates) was taken into account by means of multiple regression analysis.

The regional variation of suicide and homicide in the USA and Taiwan.

This study shows that the social correlates of suicide rates in the USA and Taiwan are quite different, and that Durkheim's theory of suicide does not appear to be valid in Taiwan. By contrast, homicide rates in both nations do share some common social correlates, including divorce rates and crime rates.

Self-concept and academic performance in gifted and academically weak students.

This study investigated potential correlates of academic achievement, including self-concept, extracurricular activities, family environment, and gender. Findings indicated that while self-concept and academic achievement were associated for gifted 7th and 8th graders, the two variables were not associated for academically weak students. For this latter group, living with a stepparent was associated with poorer academic performance.

State initiatives in addressing youth suicide: evidence for their effectiveness.

An examination of the period from 1980 to 1987 revealed that state government initiatives were, in general, associated with a beneficial effect on teenage suicide rates in the states of America. Student participation in school-based suicide prevention programs, however, was associated with a detrimental effect on state teenage suicide rates. The implications of these results were discussed.
