Histocompatibility and tooth transplantation in the rabbit.

Allogeneic orthotopic tooth transplants in the rabbit appear to stimulate transplantation immunity reactions comparable to those encountered with the transplantation of other organs. Intact untreated teeth were shown to be as quantitatively immunogenic as skin grafts between unrelated animals. Histocompatibility matching of donor and recipient and removal of pulpal tissues were demonstrated to be effective means of ameliorating the immune response to allogeneic orthotopic tooth transplants in the rabbit.

Teaching of physical diagnosis to dental students and oral surgery residents.

To provide background information related to teaching of physical diagnosis, a survey was sent to all dental schools and approved oral surgery residencies. Seventy-eight percent of the schools and 90% of the residencies responded. Analysis of the data indicated only half of the reporting schools taught physical diagnosis to predoctoral students in a specifically designated course. Comparison of the type and duration of experience with that offered to medical students showed a great disparity between the two groups. The programs in physical diagnosis provided to oral surgery residents compared much more favorably with those offered medical students and were superior in some aspects. However, the total experience was not comparable to that which a resident in a medical specialty would obtain. It may be concluded from these data that the weakest link in the educational experience of the oral surgeon related to physical diagnosis lies in the predoctoral program.

The role of the dentist in the emergency room.

Although most of the problems seen by the dentist in the hospital emergency room are not life-endangering, they can still cause considerable difficulty for the patient and anxiety for the doctor when not treated quickly and effectively. To manage an emergency effectively requires a prepared plan of action. Such planning must participation of the physicians, nurses, and auxiliary emergency room personnel. Since oral and maxillofacial emergencies may present unfamiliar problems to them, they must be instructed in advance about their role in proper care of such patients. Likewise, the dentist must familiarize himself with the emergency room- its operation and its facilities. Through such cooperative efforts, effective patient management will be provided no matter what unforeseen situation may suddenly arise.

Facial growth after condylectomy or ostectomy in the mandibular ramus.

A study was conducted in six young and six adult monkeys to determine how the condyle influences growth of the mandible. Either an ostectomy in the ramus to decrease condylar height or a condylectomy was performed on each monkey. Similar morphologic changes were observed in the maxilla and the mandible of both groups, indicating that the changes resulted from ramal shortening and alterations in function rather than from loss of a condylar growth center.
