[Initial clinical studies of the preparation Immucyst for immunotherapy in patients with carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the bladder].

Over a 12-month period, thirteen patients, 10 men and 3 women, with recurrent surface transitional cell carcinomas of the urinary bladder in conjunction with CIS, are picked out and subjected to treatment. Distribution of the patients: primary multiple carcinomas combined with CIS, Ta-T1/G1-G2-4 cases; recurrent multiple carcinomas, with CIS, Ta-T1/G2-two, recurrent multiple carcinomas, combined with CIS, Ta-T1/G2-five, and T1/G3-two cases. In all instances transurethral resection (TUR) of both visible carcinomas, and CIS areas, is performed. Induction Immucyst therapy is carried out according to protocol: 3 vials BCG vaccine, dissolved in 50 ml serum, inserted intravesically once weekly over 6 weeks. The fluid is retained by the patients for up to 2 hours. Therapy is commenced within 7-14 days after TUR. Cystoscopy, cytology and biopsy of suspected areas ar done at 3, 6 and 12 days. Six of the patients reported on undergo 12-month follow-up study. The remainder (6 cases) are followed up for periods ranging from 3 to 6 months. At the actual stage of study, twelve patients are free of recurrences, and present negative cytological findings. One patient alone with carcinoma stage T1/G3 develops recurrence, treated with TUR and laser coagulation followed by immunotherapy. Two thirds of the patients sustain transitory pollakiuria and dysuria, and one third-subfebrile temperature persisting for 48 hours.

The Indiana Speech Training Aid (ISTRA). I: Comparisons between human and computer-based evaluation of speech quality.

Experimental comparisons are reported between computer-based and human judgments of speech quality for the same sets of utterances. Speech stimuli were recorded from two normal talkers, who intentionally varied the quality of their speech, and from a hearing-impaired child who was receiving speech therapy on the Indiana Speech Training Aid (ISTRA). The tape recordings were submitted for evaluation to a naive jury, an expert jury, and the ISTRA System, a microcomputer equipped with a speaker-dependent speech recognition board that generated scores representing how well utterance matched a stored template. Correlational analyses of these data indicated that humans were slightly better at judging speech quality than was the computer, but that the computer was much more reliable. These results demonstrate that computer-based speech evaluation may be a reasonable substitute for human judgments for certain types of speech drill.

Health promotion and allied health professionals: considerations for program design.

There is growing public and corporate interest in health promotion programs. Available literature suggests that health promotion may contribute to greater longevity and life satisfaction while resulting in lower health care costs. Allied health professionals are perfectly positioned to make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful health promotion effort, whether in their own lives or in the lives of patients. However, allied health professionals need to commit themselves to making behavior changes to improve their own health so that they can effectively assist patients in making similar changes. These ideas are demonstrated through a study of an employee health promotion program for allied health professionals in a health maintenance organization.

Diagnosis of HTLV-III infection by ultrastructural examination of germinal centers in lymph node--a case report.

Serum from a patient suspected of having AIDS showed positive ELISA tests but the diagnostic p 41 band was absent and the p 24 band was barely discernible on a Western blot. Before another Western blot was performed lentivirions were detected between dendritic reticulum cells in a lymph node biopsy. It is suggested that samples of biopsies of lymph nodes from patients with or at risk for AIDS should be embedded in resin for future ultrastructural study if indicated.

Adherence of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to measles-virus infected cells: modulation by solubilized rhesus erythrocyte membranes and carbohydrates.

The adherence of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to HeLa cells persistently infected with measles virus (HeLa-K11) was studied. The following data were observed. (i) The proportion of HeLa-K11 cells with adherent human peripheral blood lymphocytes of rhesus monkey erythrocytes was similar over a wide range of ratios of HeLa-K11 cells to lymphocytes or erythrocytes. (ii) The great majority of human peripheral blood lymphocytes and erythrocytes reacted with the same HeLa-K11 cell (iii). The adherence of lymphocytes or erythrocytes to HeLa-K11 cells was blocked by rabbit anti-measles virus antibody or solubilized monkey erythrocyte membranes. The pretreatment of erythrocytes or lymphocytes with receptor-destroying enzyme did not alter their adherence properties. (iv) The pattern of inhibition observed with several carbohydrates was similar in both the erythrocyte and the lymphocyte adherence assays. These data are consistent with the possibility that the receptor present on both rhesus monkey erythrocytes and human lymphocytes has similar specificities and biochemical composition.
