Orbital frustration at the origin of the magnetic behavior in LiNiO2.

We report on the ESR, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility measurements performed over a large temperature range, from 1.5 to 750 K, on high-quality stoichiometric LiNiO2. We find that this compound displays two distinct temperature regions where its magnetic behavior is anomalous. With the help of a statistical model based on the Kugel'-Khomskii Hamiltonian, we show that below T(of) approximately 400 K, an orbitally frustrated state characteristic of the triangular lattice is established. This then gives a solution to the long-standing controversial problem of the magnetic behavior in LiNiO2.

The bioethics tabloids: how professional ethicists have fallen for the myth of tertiary transmitted heterosexual AIDS.

The hysteria and misconceptions about AIDS which are fostered and held by the popular press have been accepted uncritically by many bioethicists, who have not bothered to explore popular empirical claims in sufficient depth. As a result, and because ethicists attempt to sell moral problems in a manner not much different from the way the popular press attempt to sell newspapers, artificial dilemmas have been produced in professional journals. We concentrate on just one popular misconception about AIDS--that the heterosexual incidence of the syndrome is widespread--and show how bioethicists' unreflective acceptance of this myth has led them to make conceptual and practical errors.

An analysis of a prehistoric homicide from northern California.

An analysis was performed on a prehistoric human vertebral column recovered during an archaeological excavation in the Sierra of northern California. Fifteen burials believed to represent the Maidu culture of 400 to 700 years ago were recovered. The vertebral column from one of the individuals is particularly significant because of three embedded projectile points. The analysis attempts to recreate the trajectory of each point; to determine the possible extent of damage done by each with emphasis upon which could have been fatal; and by employing available ethnographic and archaeological data, to suggest the possible circumstances surrounding the violent event. The conclusion suggests that death may have resulted from any of the three wounds and was probably the result of an intratribal dispute.

Cyanide-Resistant Respiration in Suspension Cultured Cells of Nicotiana glutinosa L.

The respiration of dark-grown Nicotiana glutinosa L. cells in liquid suspension culture was found to be highly cyanide resistant and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) sensitive, indicative of an active alternative respiratory pathway. This was especially true during the lag and logarithmic phases of the 14-day growth cycle. Mitochondria isolated from logarithmically growing cells exhibited active oxidation of malate, succinate, and exogenous NADH. Oxidation of all three substrates had an optimum pH of 6.5 and all were highly resistant to inhibited by cyanide and sensitive to SHAM. Respiratory control was exhibited by all three substrates but only if SHAM was present to block the alternative pathway and divert electrons to the phosphorylating cytochrome pathway. The cyanide-resistant oxidation of exogenous NADH has previously only been associated with Arum spadix mitochondria. Coemergence during evolution of the alternative respiratory pathway and the exogenous NADH dehydrogenase in plant mitochondria as a possible mechanism for removal of cytoplasmic NADH is proposed. Evidence is presented which suggests that mitochondrial assays should be performed at pH 6.5.
