Mucoepidermoid tumor of the lacrimal sac.

A 58-year-old man had a mucoepidermoid tumor of the lacrimal apparatus. Histologically the tumor exhibited clumps and nests of neoplastic cells that showed an admixture of squamous and mucussecreting cells. Histochemical stains for glycoproteins were useful in arriving at the correct diagnosis. Biologically the tumor seemed to be locally aggressive but not metastatic and should be differentiated histologically from the conventional squamous cell carcinomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, adenocarcinomas, and adenoacanthomas. Large advanced lesions may be managed only by radical surgery, and the margins should be carefully studied for residual tumor. Frequent follow-up is recommended to detect early recurrence.

Leopard syndrome, a neural crest disorder: a case report.

A case of Leopard syndrome with full clinical expression is reported. In addition to the cardinal signs of the syndrome this patient presented some abnormalities which have not been previously described such as macroglossia, multiple dental anomalies, basilar impression and platybasia, megacolon, hypertrophy of clitoris and anal ectopy. The presence of dental anomalies and megacolon may represent involvement of the dental papillae and myenteric plexus favoring the view that the syndrome results from a derangement of the neural crest elements.

[Giant granulo-cellular Abrikosov's tumor].

A case of Abrikossoff's granular-cell tumor is reported because of its unusually large dimensions (12.5 X 10.5 X 8.0 cm.), weight (700 g.) and supra-umbilical localization. Ample surgical excision of the tumor and reconstruction of the abdominal wall with silastic and skin graft were performed. Comments are made about the clinical, histopathological and histogenetic aspects of the neoplasia.

Spontaneous aortic rupture in a malignant schwannoma.

We have described a case of malignant schwannoma (MS) originating from the posterior mediastinum with subsequent pathologic rupture of the thoracic aorta. The patient presented with acute retrosternal pain radiating to the back, and she died on the day of admission. Necropsy revealed a large hemothorax and a tumor mass involving the thoracic aorta. The histologic features of the lesion fulfilled the criteria for delineated MS. We found no similar cases of thoracic MS with consequent aorta rupture.

Gastric polyp of the umbilicus in an 8-year-old boy.

A case of unbilical polyp composed of gastric mucosa is reported in a 8-year-old boy. This is an extremely rare lesion probably originating in remnants of the omphalo-enteric duct and mainly diagnosed in the newborn period. Clinically, this polyp should be differentiated from exhuberant proliferation of granulation tissue which represents the granuloma pyogenicum of the umbilical scar.

Disseminated histiocytosis and intestinal malakoplakia. Occurrence due to Mycobacterium intracellulare infection.

Disseminated histiocytic proliferation and intestinal malakoplakia due to Mycobacterium intracellulare occurred in a 2-year-old white boy. Light and electron microscopic examination of autopsy material disclosed disseminated histiocytosis and malakoplakia of the intestine with numerous intracellular acid-fast bacilli. The isolated organism produced a similar disseminated histiocytosis and finally death when injected into experimental animals. A review of the literature showed only 12 previously reported cases of disseminated histiocytosis due to M intracellulare infection. We were unable to find a previous report of malakoplakia due to nontuberculous mycobacterial infection.

Persistent atrial standstill with limb girdle muscular dystrophy.

A case of persistent atrial standstill associated with muscular dystrophy of the limb girdle type is reported for the first time in the literature, In spite, of advanced myopathy, the patient delivered an apparently normal child. Hemodynamic studies including a normal coronary cinearteriography were performed in the post-partum period. The patient also had clinical and radiological evidence of peptic ulcer which may be the expression of an excessive vagal tone. A congenitial anomaly of the conduction system might explain the association of left anterior hemiblock with persistent atrial standstill, but could not be demonstrated.

[Myotubular or centronuclear myopathy; report of a case and review of the literature].

A case of centronuclear or myotubular myopathy in a 13-year-old boy who was admitted with hypotonia and congenital ptosis is reported. Clinical, electromyographic and pathologic studies are discussed. A review of the electron microscopic features and comparison with out findings is included. Review of the literature disclosed near 50 cases of centronuclear myopathy. The diferential diagnosis is discussed.

Benign granular cell tumor ("myoblastoma") of the stomach.

Two cases of benign granular cell tumor of the stomach which were found incidentally are reported. A review of the literature disclosed 10 case reports and three other cases which were mentioned. Despite the small size of the tumors eight of the 10 cases produced gastrointestinal signs or symptoms. A brief discussion of the histogenesis of the lesion is presented.

Transitional cell papilloma of ureter in young boy.

A case of transitional cell papilloma of the ureter is reported in a seven-year-old boy who had a history of severe flank pain and was found to have hydronephrosis of the left kidney. A brief review of the literature has revealed that transitional cell papilloma of the ureter is extremely rare in children.
