Very little information is available concerning the frequency of influenza in East Africa. Following recent outbreaks of influenza in Uganda, that were due to the A2/Hong Kong/68 virus, it was considered useful to obtain information relating to the prevalence of infection due to this virus and to the current strain of influenza B virus, not only in Uganda but also in the neighbouring territories of Kenya and Tanzania. The results of serological testing of sera showed that widespread outbreaks of influenza A2/Hong Kong/68 infection had occurred recently in all three territories, while there was evidence of sporadic infection in all territories by the current influenza B strain. Despite the favourable climate of East Africa, it is evident that widespread outbreaks of influenza can occur, and these may arise during the period of the year when influenza is rare in countries with temperate climates. Influenza can easily spread to other countries via air travellers to and from East Africa.

A field trial is reported in which good sero-conversion rates were obtained when a dose of 200 TCID(50) Beckenham 31 strain (Wellcovax) measles vaccine was administered by Ped-O-Jet subcutaneously in a volume of 0.5 ml. per dose. It is suggested that use of this reduced dosage would lead to a significant reduction in the cost per dose of the vaccine, especially when administered on a scale large enough to justify the use of multidose containers.
Six patients with proved typhoid fever were treated with a combination of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole; four others were treated with chloramphenicol. All ten patients made an uneventful recovery.Though the numbers are small it appears that the patients treated with the combined drugs did just as well as those treated with chloramphenicol, and fever seemed to subside quicker with the combined drugs.Trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole have low toxicities, so further studies of their use in the treatment of typhoid are justified.

Measles is a serious disease in Nigeria, causing severe morbidity and appreciable mortality; it occurs almost exclusively in the pre-school child with a peak incidence in the second year of life. A safe measles vaccine would be of inestimable value both in that country and in other areas where the disease constitutes a grave menace. Studies using vaccines of the Enders Edmonston B type have shown that while these are efficient immunizing agents, severe reactions are too frequent to permit of their wide general use. In the quest for safer vaccines, and in accordance with the recommendations of a WHO Scientific Group, a field trial was undertaken in Western Nigeria in May 1964 to make direct comparisons of the antigenicity and reaction rates of three further-attenuated measles vaccines (Schwarz, Beckenham 20 and Beckenham 20/2) and Enders Edmonston B vaccine plus gamma-globulin. A control group was also included.Analysis of the clinical responses demonstrated that reactions were similar, and of minimal severity, in all vaccine groups. Neutralizing antibody responses showed that all the vaccines used were effective immunizing agents. From the point of view of ease of administration and expense, however, further-attenuated vaccines seem preferable to Enders Edmonston B administered with gamma-globulin.
A case of neonatal septicemia resulting from group B Streptococcus, type Ic is reported. The infection occurred in a premature infant delivered by cesarean section, which followed fetal distress. The same organism was isolated from a high vaginal swab taken from the mother who had had premature rupture of the membranes 48 hours before admission to the hospital. Both infant and mother made satisfactory recoveries. This is the first case of neonatal group B streptococcal infection reported from Nigeria.
