Prevalence and correlates of tobacco use among 10-12 year old school students in Patna District, Bihar, India.

In order to assess the prevalence and correlates of tobacco use among school students (10-12 years), information on tobacco use and socio-demographic variables was collected from 1626 students (male 1027) using a questionnaire. Bivariate and multiple regression analysis were done. Ever users in the sample were 16.6% (95 % CI 14.8, 18.4) and current users were 5.1 % (95 % CI 4.1, 61). Current use was significantly associated with male sex (OR 2.3, CI 1.09 5.14), students not participating in sports (OR 2, CI 1.04 4.04), tobacco use among friends (OR 4, CI 2.02 8.25), unaware of harmful effects of tobacco (OR 2.6, CI 1.1 6.14) and students who were used by parents and teachers to buy tobacco for them (OR 2.1, CI 1.4 4.19). Tobacco control programs focusing on male students, those who do not participate in sports, those whose friends use tobacco and those who are used by parents and teachers to buy tobacco are warranted.

A non-contact technique for evaluation of elastic structures at large stand-off distances: applications to classification of fluids in steel vessels.

A novel technique for non-contact evaluation of structures in air at large stand-off distances (on the order of several meters) has been developed. It utilizes a recently constructed air-coupled, parametric acoustic array to excite the resonance vibrations of elastic, fluid-filled vessels. The parametric array is advantageous for NDE applications in that it is capable of producing a much narrower beamwidth and broader bandwidth than typical devices that operate under linear acoustic principles. In the present experiments, the array operates at a carrier frequency of 217 kHz, and the sound field several meters from the source is described spectrally by the envelope of the drive voltage. An operating bandwidth of more than 25 kHz at a center frequency of 15 kHz is demonstrated. For the present application, the array is used to excite vibrations of fluid-filled, steel containers at stand-off distances of greater than 3 m. The vibratory response of a container is detected with a laser vibrometer in a monostatic configuration with the acoustic source. By analyzing the change in the response of the lowest order, antisymmetric Lamb wave as the interior fluid loading conditions of the container are changed, the fluid contained within the steel vessel is classified.

Study of human pyramidalis muscle in Indian subjects.

The pyramidalis muscle has been studied in 31 human male cadavers of subjects from Uttar Pradesh (India). The measurements of the length and the breadth have been recorded. The asymmetry in size of the muscles, in the same individual, was found to be significant (p less than 0.05). In view of the available literature of this muscle a speculation could be ascertained regarding its regressive nature in the evolutionary history. Therefore electromyographic studies of this muscle are required to establish its present status in reference to functional utility of this muscle with the anatomy of the linea alba.

Cancellous structure of tarsal bones.

The internal structure of the tarsal bones has been studied to investigate their cancellous architecture. It is revealed that these bones have fine and coarse meshworks and even a tendency for obliteration of the trabecular pattern in the bones lying distal to this midtarsal joint. Internal structure of the talus does not show an arched pattern of bony lamellae. An increased density of bony lamellae in the internal structure of the navicular bone could result from excessive stress, enforced by its close relationship to the three cuneiform bones.

Incidence, pattern and direction of hair distribution on the dorsum of phalanges of the hands of male medical students of Uttar Pradesh, India.

In the present investigation direction and pattern of hair distribution were observed on the dorsum of phalanges of hands in 115 male medical students from Uttar Pradesh, India. Inproximal phalanges of the hands the direction of hair showed the relation with fingers. Observation of hair from little finger to thumb revealed the changes in direction from ulnar to radial (p less than 0.05). Probability of incidence of hair distribution was also studied among the fingers of both the hands. This correlation was significant on the proximal phalanges (p less than 0.05). However, no significant correlation coefficient was observed in the middle phalanges of the hands.

Cartilage canal and chondroepiphysis of the lower end of the femur of human fetuses.

Cartilage canals were linked with the affinity for the differentiation of growth disc at the beginning of their organization. Anastomosis between the cartilage canals, dilatation and their communication with marrow sprout in the region of growth disc further supported this fact. Perichondrial role in the expansion of chondroepiphysis was also observed in a phenomenon of appositional growth in the region of chondroepiphysis. Vascular looping could also be observed in the Junctional region of the chondroepiphysis with the growth disc.
