Treatment of RAEB-t with intensive chemotherapy and GM-CSF.

A 55-yr old woman with refractory anaemia with excess of blasts in transformation developed prolonged bone marrow hypoplasia following two courses of mitozantrone and cytosine arabinoside. The administration of granulocyte-monocyte colony stimulating factor after two months of pancytopenia led to recovery of normal bone-marrow function, without any morphological evidence of myelodysplasia, which has persisted until the last blood count (6 months +).

Anemia, Refractory, with Excess of Blasts

Direct intravascular fetal blood transfusion by fetoscopy in severe Rhesus isoimmunisation.

Two fetuses with severe anaemia due to rhesus incompatibility each received two early blood transfusions (between 23 and 25 weeks) by fetoscopy. The blood was given directly into an umbilical vessel, either at the umbilicus or at the placental cord insertion. Fetal blood samples were taken before and after transfusion to assess the haematological status of the fetus. One grossly hydropic fetus survived.

Preliminary clinical assessment of I.C.R.F. 159 in acute leukaemia and lymphosarcoma.

I.C.R.F. 159, a new antitumour agent, has been assessed in six patients with acute leukaemia and three with lymphosarcoma. In all but two there was a considerable fall in circulating primitive cells, and in one there was bone-marrow evidence of a partial remission. Severe toxic effects were seen in only one case; they consisted of alopecia and gastroenteritis. It is suggested that I.C.R.F. 159 is worth further examination in all forms of acute leukaemia and lymphosarcoma.
