Immunologic memory responses induced in BALB/c mice by cross-linked outer membrane extracts of four Salmonella serotypes.

Outer membrane proteins (OMP), extracted from Salmonella enteritidis, S anatum, S typhimurium, and S infantis, were cross-linked to form a large immunogen (4-OMP-lipopolysaccharide [LPS]). Vaccinations with 4-OMP-LPS dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline solution and 4-OMP-LPS emulsified with muramyl dipeptide were capable of eliciting specific and sustained primary IgM and IgG responses in BALB/c mice, as well as inducing immunologic memory for 130 days. In addition to 4-OMP-LPS-specific responses, substantial IgM and IgG responses specific for each live homologous organism were detected over the 130-day trial. In comparison with vaccination with 4-OMP-LPS dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline solution, responses specific for the antigen or the homologous Salmonella were not markedly increased in mice vaccinated with 4-OMP-LPS emulsified with muramyl dipeptide. Seemingly, cross-linked OMP, without the inclusion of muramyl dipeptide, may have potential as vaccine components and may induce immunologic memory.

Corticosteroid therapy-induced obesity in children.

The severity and persistence of corticosteroid-induced obesity were evaluated retrospectively in 23 children aged 1-14 yrs requiring more than 60 days of therapy with prednisone for idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Mean relative weight (after clearing of proteinuria) at initiation of therapy was 107 +/- 10 percent. Peak relative weight on therapy was 119 +/- 15 percent following a mean total of 31 months of cumulative steroid therapy. The most recent available relative weight in remission at least 6 months following cessation of therapy was 107 +/- 18 percent. The number of children whose relative weight exceeded 120 percent at initiation of, during and following therapy was 3, 10, and 4, respectively. In those with normal initial relative weight (less than 110%) there was no persistent obesity. Two of three initially obese patients (relative weight greater than 120%) remained obese. All patients with persistent obesity following therapy had initial relative weight of at least 110 percent and peak relative weight of more than 130 percent. The risk of persistent obesity as a result of chronic corticosteroid therapy in initially normal weight children who do not exceed 130 percent relative weight during therapy appears to be small.

Clinical and grid predictions of inconsistencies in individuals' personal constructs.

An experiment was conducted to determine the ability of the coordinate grid to assess logical inconsistencies that characterize individuals. Previous research has shown the grid differentiates groups predicted to vary in inconsistency. In the present study therapists' were significantly likely to differentiate real from bogus grid reports of their clients' inconsistencies. Results suggest the grid does assess inconsistencies that characterize the individual.

Comparison of creatinine as determined with the Ames Seralyzer and by three Jaffé-based methods.

We compared results for urinary creatinine, serum creatinine, and creatinine clearance, as determined with the Ames Seralyzer, with results determined with the Beckman ASTRA, the DuPont aca, and Technicon's AutoAnalyzer and SMAC. Results for urinary creatinine from the Seralyzer differed significantly (p less than 0.05) from those obtained with the ASTRA and AutoAnalyzer, but not with the aca. The Seralyzer results for serum creatinine were at least 1.0 mg/L higher (p less than 0.05) than by the other three methods. Results for creatinine clearance from the Seralyzer were 8 to 11 mL/min lower (p less than 0.05) than results by the other three methods. These differences are related to the positive interference by bilirubin in the Seralyzer creatinine method. We also evaluated 23 other compounds for interference with these methods for creatinine.

Lung function in North American Indian children: reference standards for spirometry, maximal expiratory flow volume curves, and peak expiratory flow.

Reference standards of lung function was determined in 176 healthy North American Indian children (94 girls, 82 boys) 7 to 18 yr of age. Spirometry, maximal expiratory flow volume curves, and peak expiratory flow rate were measured using techniques and equipment recommended by the American Thoracic Society. Standing height was found to be an accurate predictor of lung function, and prediction equations for each lung function variable are presented using standing height as the independent variable. Lung volumes and expiratory flow rates in North American Indian children were similar to those previously reported for white and Mexican-American children but were greater than those in black children. In both boys and girls, lung function increased in a curvilinear fashion. Volume-adjusted maximal expiratory flow rates after expiring 50 or 75% of FVC tended to decrease in both sexes as age and height increased. Our maximal expiratory flow volume curve data suggest that as North American Indian children grow, lung volume increases at a slightly faster rate than airway size does.

Diagnosis of hysterical seizures in epileptic patients.

The coexistence of epileptic and hysterical seizures in the same patient is not rare and creates problems in diagnosis and management. The authors used simultaneous video-EEG monitoring to document the diagnosis of hysterical seizures in 9 epileptic patients; clear-cut hysterical seizures were seen in all 9. The authors used individualized re-educative psychotherapy to teach patients alternative coping techniques and discharged them on minimum dosages of anticonvulsants. None of the patients had a classical hysterical personality, which suggests that conversion reaction is a more appropriate diagnosis, The etiology of "hysterical" seizures varies; the authors emphasize individualized treatment and long-term follow-up.

The antilingula as an anatomic landmark in oral surgery.

The antilingula is a highly variable anatomic landmark and in most instances is situated considerably anteriorly and superiorly to the inferior dental foramen. However, a cut made between 5 and 10 mm. distal to the antilingula is within a statistically safe area, in over 72 per cent of cases, to avoid encroaching upon the inferior alveolar foramen.
