Granular cell myoblastoma: rare localization in the trachea. Report of a case and review of the literature.

Granular cell myoblastoma is an uncommon tumor in the respiratory tract. It usually occurs in the tongue, skin, breast, or subcutaneous tissue. When it occurs in the respiratory tract, it is usually located in the bronchus or larynx. Primary tracheal location is rare with only nine such cases reported in the literature. This report describes a 26-year-old woman with granular cell myoblastoma of the trachea. She presented with a four-year history of bronchial asthma. The tumor was surgically excised by tracheal resection and reconstruction. The patient has remained well and free of obstructive airway symptoms, without recurrence of the tumor for more than one year.

Perinatal Herpes virus infection: report of a case indicating the paternal role.

A case of perinatal Herpes simplex hominis infection with fatal neonatal outcome is reported. The significance of the paternal role is emphasized. It is important to educate sexual partners and stress the serious nature of herpetic infections, especially during the perinatal period. In the presence of active infection, sexual contact should either be totally avoided or a condom should be used.

Fatal hemorrhage complicating carcinoma of the esophagus. Report of four cases.

Four cases of esophageal carcinoma complicated by fatal hemorrhage are reported. All four patients had recently completed radiation therapy. An aortoesophageal fistula was present in two cases; fibrinoid necrosis of the esophageal arteries was present in the other two. The esophageal tumor was localized in two cases and had disappeared in one case. In one patient it had metastasized widely. Ninety-nine other reports of esophageal cancer and fatal hemorrhage are reviewed from the literature. Aortoesophageal fistula was the cause of hemorrhage in 78 cases. Occlusion of the vasa vasorum by thrombosis, inflammation, neoplastic cells or radiation injury appears to be the cause of aortic necrosis and fistula formation. Prompt surgical approach, if possible, should be used to control hemorrhage, as the primary tumor may be localized to the esophagus only.

Primary fibrosarcoma of the liver. Case report and review of the literature.

A case of primary fibrosarcoma of the liver occurring in a 51-year-old man is added to 11 previously published cases. The neoplasm was moderately differentiated and occurred in a cirrhotic liver. Review of the literature revealed this to be the 3rd case of fibrosarcoma associated with cirrhosis. In 4 additional cases of cirrhosis-associated fibrosarcoma, a coexistent primary carcinoma was present in a different part of the same liver.

Myelography wiht perfluoroctylbromide. Comparison with Pantopaque.

The efficacy and toxicity of perfluoroctylbromide in myelography were studied in dogs. Perfluoroctylbromide moves freely in intrathecal space and provides satisfactory radiopacity for diagnosis of subarachnoid structures. The outstanding feature of this substance is its low toxicity. The dog tolerates 0.5-1.0 ml/kg intrathecally without toxic manifestation. Histological studies and CSF analyses show that it is much less irriating than Pantopaque. Because of the long retention of the perfluorocarbon removal may be necessary. Perfluoroctylbromide shows promise as a diagnostic contrast medium, particularly in cases where the currently available contrast media are not suitable.
