Potential contribution of arbuscular mycorrhiza to cadmium immobilisation in soil.

The contribution of arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) to immobilisation of Cd in substrate was studied in two experiments. In the first experiment, substrates prepared by cultivating tobacco, either non-mycorrhizal or inoculated with the AM fungus Glomus intraradices were enriched with a range of Cd concentrations, and Cd toxicity in the substrates was assessed using root growth tests with lettuce as a test plant. The tests revealed lower Cd toxicity in the mycorrhizal than in the non-mycorrhizal substrate, and the difference increased with increasing total Cd concentration in the substrates. In the second experiment, extraradical mycelium (ERM) of G. intraradices exposed in vivo to Cd was collected and analysed on Cd concentration. The ERM accumulated 10-20 times more Cd per unit of biomass than tobacco roots. While Cd concentrations were lower in the biomass of mycorrhizal plants than of non-mycorrhizal plants, Cd immobilisation by ERM did not affect the total Cd content in mycorrhizal tobacco. It is concluded that mycorrhiza may decrease Cd toxicity to plants by enhancing Cd immobilisation in soil. The results therefore suggest a potential role of AM symbiosis in the phytostabilisation of contaminated soils, where high Cd availability inhibits plant growth.

Functional specialization of the epithelium in the mesonephric tubules.

An electron microscopy study was aimed to correlate structural differentiation of the epithelium in mesonephric proximal tubules (PT) with the expression of membrane activities of alkaline phosphatase (AP) and 5'-nucleotidase (AMP). Tissue samples of mesonephros were taken from 5 to 16 days old chick embryos. Both enzymes were detected with cerium technique, Mayahara modification of lead capture method was used also for localization of AP. Control incubation was performed with levamisole. The formation of absorptive apparatus was characterized by the differentiation of PT epithelium. Activities of AP and AMP appeared to increase rapidly with the differentiation of epithelium. Reaction products of AP and AMP were detected on brush border as well as on membranes of tubular invaginations, transport tubules and endocytotic vacuoles. The basolateral cell surfaces of epithelium were projected in short interdigitating microvilli and the expression of AP and AMP activities on their membranes suggested the transport role of this structural specialization.

[Blood group Du].

When examining blood group D, sensitive methods must be used which will detect false Du as D positive. When these methods are used the incidence of true Du is low, 1-2 pro mille. Moreover Du positive erythrocytes are practically not immunogenic, they may only be able to stimulate a secondary immune response, as easily revealed during antibody screening and during cross-matching. Their immunoreactivity is also low, a passively administered anti-D antibody does not eliminate them from the circulation. The clinical impact of true Du is therefore doubtful. There are also doubts as to the practical value of examination of Du. The authors submit their views on different clinical situations which concern donors and recipients of blood transfusions, pregnant women and neonates.
