[Tuberculosis in Romania (author's transl)].

The incidence of tuberculosis in Romania has decreased considerably over the past years, particularly since 1972 when the combined rifampicin-ethambutol-pyrazinamide therapy was introduced. During the period 1968-1977 it fell from 127.9 per 100,000 to 73.4 per 100,000. The incidence of relapses fell at a slower rate. The most endangered are the 20-24 years age-group and old people; but here again the number of cases tends to fall. Childhood tuberculosis showed a yearly decline by an average of 20%. Bacteriological examinations and diagnosis are assuming increased importance.

[The clinico-epidemiological aspects of the tuberculosis incidence in the Gypsy population in the 4th and 5th districts of the city of Bucharest].

The study analyzes 126 gypsy patients, aged over 15, registered with tuberculosis over 2 years (1996-1997) in two districts of Bucharest (IV and V). The risk of the disease was twice larger in men than women, the age group most affected was 30-49. For lung tuberculosis, bacteriological confirmation was 85%. 83% of bacteriological confirmed cases were smear positive, suggesting the high contagious risk at the time of the discovery. Only 48% favorable results after chemotherapy are partially explained by the low level of education for health in this population, high rate of associated diseases (66.7%) etc. Being a group with high risk for tuberculosis, the gypsy population needs targeted measures for discovering the disease and prophylaxis.

[A study of the risk factors for relapse in pulmonary tuberculosis patients and the results of the re-treatment].

The percentage of relapses among the global TB incidence in Romania increased from 7.7% in 1990 to 13.1% in 1999. The study group included 648 cases with relapsing lung tuberculosis, registered in the second semester, 1997. In more than half of the cases (54.9%) the relapse occurred in the 5 years following the healing of the previous episode. The percentage of 65.5% smear positives represents an increase compared to the first episode (61.7%) and illustrates the severity of these cases. From the first to the second episode, there was an increase of the percentage of "unemployed" and "retreated". Associated diseases were: COPD (10.6%), peptic ulcer (10%) and chronic hepatitis (9.6%). We found high percentages for drinking habits (46.9%) and smoking (41.5%). The re-treatment resulted in only 49% healing, compared to 75.7% at the first episode. This calls for an improvement of initial chemotherapy as well as re-treatment (introducing DOTS).

[Comparative immediate results after the use of several lyophilized BCG vaccines].

A number of 1928 children were vaccinated intradermally with 12 series of BCG vaccine produced by the Cantacuzino Institute and 2 experimental vaccines, prepared in the same laboratory by the same current technique, i.e. a Romanian strain and a French strain, lot 1173 P2. With the experimental vaccines 2 doses were used, with the other vaccines a single standard dose of 0.10 mg. Appraisal of tuberculin sensitivity 8-10 weeks after vaccination showed differences in tuberculin duration, varying between 13.23 mm and 16.27 mm in diameter with the selected vaccines (using 2 units PPD) and were much smaller (8.6 mm -- 12.28 mm) with the operational series of vaccines.
