The influence of various factors on breast-feeding in Slovenia.

This research on breast-feeding was conducted with 881 randomly selected Slovenian mothers who gave birth in January and February 1992. At the time of the study the infants were about 15 months old. The survey was conducted in the homes of the mothers. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, t-test and multivariate binary regression analysis. The mothers' average age was 26.2 years. Their educational level was approximately 12 years of public schooling. On average there were 1.67 children per family. Of the total surveyed, 22 mothers (2.5%) did not breast-feed their babies; 38 mothers (4.3%) were still breast-feeding at the time of the survey. The average duration of breast-feeding for mothers who stopped before or at 15 months of the infant's age was 159.1 days (about 5 months). Having adequate information about breast-feeding and failing to state problems during the breast-feeding period were found to be positive influences which induced mothers to breast-feed their infants. Characteristics of the mothers which influenced longer duration of breast-feeding were: feeding eight or more times daily in the first month of breast-feeding, the birth order of the infant, attending courses for parents, deciding before the birth to breast-feed, living in the city, living with a partner, having a secure income, having no other problems during the period of breast-feeding, spoon-feeding liquids, having a secondary level or more of education, being well informed about breast-feeding and giving the first feed within 12 hours after the birth. Breast feeding among Slovenian mothers is significantly on the rise and the period of breast-feeding is being extended to 6 months. Nevertheless, greater efforts are needed in the education of health personnel to promote and support the healthy practice of breast-feeding.

Inhibition of MNNG-induced gastroduodenal carcinoma in rats by synchronous application of wine or 11% ethanol.

There are divergent opinions on the effect of ethanol in the carcinogenesis of gastroduodenal tumors. The effect of the synchronous application of 11% ethanol or wine (11% ethanol) and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (100 micrograms/ml, MNNG) in a drinking solution on the incidence of gastroduodenal tumors was evaluated. Sixty outbred male Wistar rats were distributed among three groups. The animals drank MNNG and ethanol or wine for six months and consumed the same quantity of MNNG. Then they consumed a normal diet until the 13th month, when the experiment was terminated. The stomach and duodenum were examined histologically. In the stomach, 15 tumors (2 squamous paillomas, 4 squamous carcinomas, 1 sarcoma, and 8 adenocarcinomas) and 4 cases of dysplasia were found; in the duodenum, there were four cases of adenocarcinoma. There were 6 cases of multiple tumors. Incidence of forestomach tumors did not differ among the groups, whereas the incidence of glandular stomach carcinoma and duodenal carcinoma was significantly lower in the groups treated with 11% ethanol or wine than in the control group. MNNG was not inactivated by ethanol in the drinking solutions. We concluded that the inhibitory effect on gastroduodenal carcinogenesis is the result of 11% ethanol ingestion and its protective action on the mucosa and not of the wine's nonethanol components.

The relationship between skinfold thicknesses, body circumferences, plasma lipids and glucose in the elderly.

A total of 699 inhabitants of Ljubljana (269 men and 430 women) aged over 60 years were examined. Weight and height were measured, the body mass index (g/cm2) was summed, skinfold thickness on 14 sites (biceps, abdomen /on the right side/, subscapular, suprailiacal, thigh, calf, lower arm /on the right and left side/) and 8 body circumferences (chest, abdomen, upper arm, thigh and calf /on the right and left side/) were determined. Fasting venous blood was taken for determining plasma glucose, total plasma cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol. Plasma cholesterol, both in men and women, is not associated with predictors of fatness - skinfold thicknesses and body circumferences. There are statistically significant correlations between plasma triglycerides and predictors of fatness, particularly in the body, both in men and women. The correlation of plasma HDL-cholesterol is inversely proportional to the predictors of fatness (circumferences and skinfold thicknesses) at the central and peripheral sites of the subcutaneous fat, in both sexes. Relations between plasma glucose and parameters of fatness (body circumferences) are weak and less frequent. They are noticed only in the female population. Body circumferences, predictors of fatness and the distribution of body fat can be as good factors as skinfold thicknesses in the population aged over 60 years.

Vitamin E status in men and women aged 60-90 years.

The vitamin E status in men and women aged 60-90 years (62 men and 124 women) was examined. Plasma free vitamin E was analysed according to a modified version of the Hansen and Warwich method--a fluorometric micromethod for serum tocopherol. Serum cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol were quantified by the enzymatic methods on a Computer Directed Analyzer. Anthropometric data included the measurement of 13 skinfold thickness dimensions and Quetelet's index of obesity computed from weight (in g) and height (in cm2). The distribution of plasma free tocopherol level ranged from 10 mumol/1 to 69.9 mumol/1 for men and from 20 mumol/1 to 64.9 mumol/1 for women (median: 40-44.9 mumol/1 for both groups). Using the range of 12-46 mumol/1 free tocopherol of the plasma as the criterion, 78.5% of the subjects were classified as having the optimal vitamin E status. With the total free tocopherol levels above 49.9 mumol/1 of plasma, 21.5% of the subjects had an over average vitamin E status. It has also been found that there were correlations between the total free plasma tocopherol and plasma lipids (plasma triglycerides, plasma cholesterol, in men and women) and HDL-cholesterol in the male population.

[The effect of pregnancy on gastric emptying in rats].

2 ml 25% of glucose have been injected by sond into stomach of 15 nonpregnant and 6 pregnant rats (tenth day of gestation). Twenty minutes later in remaining content of animals' stomach 231,5 mg glucose on an average have been found, and in nonpregnant about one quarter more. The difference is significant, P 0,05.
