Preventing staff-patient sexual relationships.

Just as the awareness of incest and childhood sexual abuse has grown in recent years, so too has knowledge of sexual exploitation of patients by psychotherapists and other mental health professionals. Almost no one, however, has discussed the prevalence of this problem in the hospital setting. The authors were members of a study group that thoroughly reviewed reported incidents in their own institution, leading to the recommendation that education is the best preventive measure currently available. The authors discuss fundamental issues involved in such a study, summarize profiles of patients and staff members who may be vulnerable to sexual involvement, and describe the main components of a preventive educational approach.

The trans-Tasman connection: facts and implications of Australia-New Zealand migration.

"This paper investigates the recent history of trans-Tasman migration from the Australian viewpoint. Particular attention is paid to the economic position of New Zealand migrants in Australia with respect to their earnings and job market experience. The value of renewed and increased net migration from New Zealand is then assessed in terms of the likely effects on the Australian labour market and on Australian productivity and living standards. The final section of the paper looks at some of the factors that are likely to determine the size and direction of future flows." Data are from the 1981 Australian census.

Modelling the peopling of Australia: 1900-1930.

An analysis of migration from the United Kingdom to Australia during the period 1900 to 1930 is presented. The author attempts "first to explicitly develop and estimate a model of the behavioural relations of the two blades of the Marshallian scissors, rather than mixing supply and demand (under the polyglot terms of 'push-pull') in a single equation without regard to the problem of identification. And second, [he attempts] to incorporate in these structural equations key elements of government intervention in the migration process." The relationship between economic factors and Australian government support for immigration is considered. The author also identifies three factors influencing annual variations in the flow of migration from the United Kingdom: expected income gains, transport costs, and the costs of job search.
