[Functional and metabolic activity of leukocytes in patients with chronic brucellosis].

AIM: Investigation of functional-metabolic activity of leukocytes by assessment of basic components of the microbicidal system in the course of chronic brucellosis with reference to the stage, severity, complications and concomitant diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Time course of changes in myeloperoxidase, acid and alkaline phosphatase activity, levels of cation protein, glycogen and lipids in leukocytes were studied in seventy-one 16-70-year-old patients with exacerbation of chronic brucellosis. The diagnosis of primary-chronic, secondary-chronic brucellosis, subcompensation was made in 13, 58 and 69 patients, respectively. 14 patients had chronic infectious inflammatory diseases, 13 patients had chronic non-inflammatory diseases. RESULTS: Patients with chronic brucellosis at the height of the exacerbation had suppressed activity of myeloperoxidase and lowered level of cationic protein with high activity of acid and alkaline phosphatases, elevated glycogen and lipids in leukocytes. General condition of the patients improved in parallel with multidirectional shifts in the levels of microbicidal system components with normalization at the stage of persistent remission. CONCLUSION: Changes in the level of intracellular components of leukocytes depended on brucellosis stage, severity, complications, concomitant diseases, completeness of recovery. This is of clinico-diagnostic significance.

[A device for de-epithelization of the skin for skin scarification tests].

The characteristic feature of the suggested device is the presence of a safety lock limiting a forward motion of the de-epithelializer into the depth of the epidermis; this rules out injuries of small vessels and provides the necessary depth of the epithelium removal. The device is recommended for skin allergic scarification tests and for Rebuck's skin fenestra test.

[Comparative information value of humoral immunity characteristics in some bacterial and viral infections].

Serological examination of 144 patients with different bacterial and viral infections was carried out. Antibodies to Brucella were detected in blood serum in 42 patients (85.7%) with the average titer of 1:996 and in saliva in 41 patients (83.7%) with the average titer of 1:567 by passive hemagglutination test with brucella erythrocyte diagnosticum. Out of 26 dysentery patients, antibodies in blood serum were detected in the diagnostic titer in 17 patients (65.4%) with the average titer of 1:282 and in saliva in 21 patients (80.8%) in the titer of 1:100 and higher. Anti-HAV and anti-HBc IgM were detected in specimens of saliva from patients with serologically confirmed viral hepatitis A and B in 100% of cases. The presence of HBsAg in saliva from hepatitis B patients was established in 95.4% of cases. In blood serum and in specimens of saliva anti-HCV IgM were detected in 100% and 85.7% of cases respectively. Out of 25 women with aggravated obstetric history, IgG antibodies to CMV were detected in blood serum in 23 women (88.5%) and in saliva in 22 women (84.6%). The results of these investigations revealed that the detection rate of antibodies in blood serum and saliva in cases of infections, both bacterial (brucellosis, shigellosis) and viral (hepatitis A, B, C and CMV infection), was not essentially different. The simplicity of obtaining material for analysis make it possible to recommend the use of saliva for diagnosing bacterial and viral infections, especially in mass epidemiological surveys.

[The immune status of patients with typhoid fever].

The immune status in 48 typhoid fever (TF) patients has been studied. As revealed in this study, during the fever period of the disease pronounced disturbances in immune homeostasis are observed, which are manifested by T lymphopenia, the prevalence of suppressor subpopulations of T lymphocytes with the prevalence of T helpers, a considerable rise in the level of circulating immune complexes (CIC), mainly highly pathogenic medium- and low-molecular complexes. At the early period of convalescence the preservation of all these signs is indicative of fact that the treat of TF relapse is present. IN the prognosis of the disease the most informative signs are a decrease in the number of T lymphocytes and active (early) rosette-forming cells, an increase in the level of CIC and the presence of 75% and more highly pathogenic medium- and low-molecular complexes among them.

[The status of the blood antioxidant system in a chronic typhoid bacterial carrier state].

The problems dealt with in this work, the study of the pathogenesis of chronic Salmonella typhi carriership and the development of preparations for its sanation, are highly topical. The data on the evaluation of the state of antioxidative system in 33 chronic S. typhi carriers are presented. In all carriers a decrease in the activity of this system has been established, mainly in its nonenzymatic part, represented by low-molecular thiols, and an essential decrease in the buffer capacity of the thiosulfide link and catalase activity of the blood has been noted. The use of antioxidants in combination with ampicillin makes it possible to normalize the state of the antioxidative system. In all carriers no S. typhi were isolated during the first month after proposed treatment.
