Phylogenetic diversity in the genus Bacillus as seen by 16S rRNA sequencing studies.

Comparative sequence analysis of 16S ribosomal (r)RNAs or DNAs of Bacillus alvei, B. laterosporus, B. macerans, B. macquariensis, B. polymyxa and B. stearothermophilus revealed the phylogenetic diversity of the genus Bacillus. Based on the presently available data set of 16S rRNA sequences from bacilli and relatives at least four major "Bacillus clusters" can be defined: a "Bacillus subtilis cluster" including B. stearothermophilus, a "B. brevis cluster" including B. laterosporus, a "B. alvei cluster" including B. macerans, B. maquariensis and B. polymyxa and a "B. cycloheptanicus branch".

[Surgery within the scope of technical perfection and humanitarianism].

The symptoms of the strained relationship between technology and humanity in modern medicine are excessive expectations with regard to achievement, protest on the part of patients against alleged dehumanization, and protest by doctors against dissonance between the tasks of the medical profession and science. - These symptoms require of the surgeon, as a representative of medical progress, that he intensively cultivate the trust-relationship with his patients and a readiness to accept the technical controls of medical research.

[Paravesical neurinoma].

It is reported on a solitary, benign, retrovesical neurinoma in a 19-year-old male. To our knowledge the case in question is a first description. Diagnosis and therapy are discussed.

Submicroscopic investigations on calcium oxalate stone genesis.

Scanning electron microscopy of calcium oxalate stones indicates a zonary structure of the Weddellite crystals of urine concrements which is due to concentration-dependent growth oscillations representing the precipitation of various calcium oxalate hydrates. In addition to the phenomenological demonstration of Weddellite crystal shapes, incubation experiments with different solutions give rise to the postulation of a dehydration process of primary Weddellite crystals via dissolution and recrystallization to Whewellite. The solvent attack starts at energetically preferred corners, edges and lattice disorders of the Weddellite crystals. The Weddellite-stabilizing role of urinary Mg ions is emphasized.

[Effect of drugs used for the prevention of urinary calculi recurrence on the growth and metabolism of young experimental animals].

In the animal experiment should be made clear whether several medicaments which stood the test in the prevention of relapses of urinary calculi may be used without any danger also in the infantile carrier of concrements. For this purpose young rabbits high doses of diuretics, kation exchangers, aluminium oxide, extracts of the root of rubia tinctorum, succinimide and diphosphonate were given. Growth and development of the animals were negatively influenced by the medicaments, with the exception of the kation exchanger and the extracts of the root of rubia tinctorum. Numerous animals died under the administration of duiretics. The results of the examinations of metabolism only partly allow general conclusions. The medicamentous long-term metaphylaxis of the urolithiasis in childhood is also to be used like dietetic restrictions under strong indication and permanent control.

[Pseudomorphoses in calcium oxalate urinary calculi].

Pseudomorphoses of whewellite to weddellite reflect on transparent section preparations and in the REM appearances of cristallisation processes in the secondary whewellite formation via weddellite dehydration. As transformation products are found fine-grained polycrystalline as well as due to recrystallisation larger monocrystalline whewellite. An interesting analogy to this gives the thermic dehydration of weddellite crystals in direction to whewellite, which realises under formation of pseudomorphoses as topotactic process. The dissociation scars appearing in this case are strongly oriented to the crystal grid of weddellite.

Immunological and molecular variability of OspA and OspC. Implications for Borrelia vaccine development.

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the etiological agent of Lyme borreliosis is considerably heterogeneous in Europe. Since the outer surface proteins OspA and OspC are the most promising candidates for a Borrelia vaccine the immunological heterogeneity of these proteins was investigated. By immunological analysis with monoclonal antibodies and sequence analysis of PCR amplified OspA and OspC at least seven and 16 different types, respectively, were found. Whereas skin isolates (n = 68) were quite homogeneous (84% belonged to OspA-serotype 2 or Borrelia afzelii), isolates from human cerebrospinal fluid and from ticks (n = 43 and n = 90 respectively) were highly heterogeneous in their OspA-serotypes with prevalence of the Borrelia garinii associated types (about 70%). OspA-type 4 was often found among isolates from cerebrospinal fluid (28%). In ticks type 4 OspA has not been detected by culture so far. However, as reported in a previous study, type 4 OspA could be detected in ticks by the highly sensitive PCR technique.
